It’s true afaik. Also see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guanxi
- Comment on YSK that you can force Windows 10 to open your default browser instead of MS Edge with MSEdgeRedirect 1 week ago:
you can change region to English(world) or something like that (or an EU country) to remove edge and not have it auto installed again
- Comment on I'm "use NFS forfilesharing old." what's the current optimal solution for shared drives if I have like 3 linux machines in the house? 2 weeks ago:
I use both samba and NFS (with freebsd) on the same disk for my freebsd, linux and win7 desktop machine. All works perfectly fine.
I’m running an rsync daemon for large transfers and use copyparty for easily grabbing files on phones etc.
- Comment on Is it better to: [A] watch videos content on a flagship/midrange smartphone that you already have, OR [B] get a cheap tablet (say, around $200 USD) to watch videos? 3 weeks ago:
I would try getting a tablet. I don’t like Apple devices because of their “jailed” software policy but iPads have awesome display panels, maybe getting an older model for cheap could be good. Have an iPad 3 (2012) and the panel is still miles better than my cheap Lenovo P11 (2021).
- Comment on Can I self-host on old iPhones? 4 weeks ago:
projectsandcastle.org/status it worked on sandcastle, maybe it hasnt been ported to mainline yet?
if usb works then usb networking may be a better option
- Comment on Can I self-host on old iPhones? 4 weeks ago:
You have an iPhone 9? It doesn’t exist, you probably have something else.
iPhone 7 got Linux ported, so yes you can. Try looking for postmarketOS (though there aren’t that many working features, it’s good enough for running servers)

- Comment on introducing copyparty, the FOSS file server 1 month ago:
Looks fantastic, I’ll actually be trying this. Love how it doesn’t lock my files into some obscure format like seafiles.

I’d say this is actually a good thing…
- Comment on What are the privacy risks of exposing IP adresses? 2 months ago:
probably because of CGNAT or torrent trackers reporting fake stuff. Usually when the first seen and last seen equals it’s the latter, otherwise it’s the former. It’s pretty accurate for me…
- Comment on What are the privacy risks of exposing IP adresses? 2 months ago:
it could enable targeted attacks. just use a vpn if you can afford one.
- Comment on How would I repurpose a work laptop? 2 months ago:
Make sure to not have AMT or Computrace, just use linux/bsd instead of windows just to be sure.

Ever since Supermium/Mypal68 came XP is 100% usable albeit insecure. Runs MS Office 2010 and OpenOffice so there’s no issue with document compatibility too.

- Comment on Did YouTube just disable video playback for people using adblockers or is it just me? 3 months ago:
seems to work for me rn but youtube’s web ui has been extremely slow for the past few years. videos take more than 15 secs to load and start… to the point where running a terminal and doing yt-dlp & mpv is much quicker/easier.

seamonkey’s a direct descendant of netscape communicator and still includes a wysiwyg editor. it’s pretty good for basic stuff.
