Well, for the users, I guess this is a lesson for them to not bank on a Big Tech company like Apple to cover their financial credit and transactions.
- Comment on Why Bother With uBlock Being Blocked In Chrome? Now Is The Best Time To Switch To Firefox 11 months ago:
While I largely agree with the options that Tuta provides, I think the article could’ve been more succinct and to the point if they condensed all the Firefox forks like PaleMoon and WaterFox under one category. Also, I’m not sure if Brave should be on this list, not just because of their Chromium foundation but also because of their use of cryptocurrency, something I consider very suspicious and unsustainable. Finally, I question whether DuckDuckGo should be on the list. True, they are more private when compared to Google and all, but aren’t they limited to what they can block through their contract with Microsoft? I remember hearing/reading something about that.
- Comment on Which of the Fediverse projects are worth getting into? 11 months ago:
You’re absolutely right about PeerTube. However, given the recent decisions made by YouTube and its parent company on adblocking, I think we might see a surge in PeerTube content and development soon.
One thing I have noticed in the past year is that whenever Big Tech services become compromised or make controversial decisions, the Fediverse equivalent starts to bloom. I joined Mastodon and Lemmy earlier this year because of the controversies surrounding X and Reddit. Now that YouTube has done the same, I think we will soon see a “great migration” to PeerTube.
Just my two cents.

- Comment on If you live in the EU - you may also be faced with this Meta prompt. Info in text. 1 year ago:
That’s true, and as with any networking platform, whether that be a social media site or a messaging app, who you know and how many of them are on the platform is a strong determining factor in whether you join that platform or not. For now, I just have an account set up on both of those sites, just in case, but I’m not holding my breath for any of my close friends to join anytime soon.

I recently discovered Pixelfed and Friendica on the Fediverse. They are the equivalent to Instagram and Facebook, respectively. Perhaps now would be a good time to migrate over to those platforms?

- Comment on Consumers are paying more than ever for streaming TV each month and analysts say there’s no reason for the companies to stop raising prices 1 year ago:
It’s gotten to a point where the higher prices and the lack of new content worth watching are getting harder to justify subscriptions to those platforms. A decade ago, I could subscribe to either Hulu or Netflix, and that would be good enough for me. Now, there are so many platforms, and the shows I want to watch are spread across different platforms.
It’s just not worth it. I might as well just watch clips of my favorite shows and episodes on YouTube. If one of the streaming platforms does push out something that’s worth the monthly fee, then fine, I’ll subscribe.
- Comment on Smokey's Simple Guide To Search Engine Alternatives 1 year ago:
This is awesome! I recently switched over to Kagi because of several Lemmy posts mentioning it as an alternative. However, I really appreciate you sharing your preferred SearXNG instance. I have it added to my browser’s list of search engines and may switch to it from time-to-time to see how different it is from Kagi. If there really isn’t much of a difference, then I may switch to it after my Kagi membership ends.
- Comment on Google backs out of plan to build 20,000 Bay Area homes, over “market conditions” 1 year ago:
For a company that has a reputation of announcing and releasing ambitious projects only to cancel or send them into a “graveyard”, this does not surprise me. I do not discount the current housing market as a factor leading into this decision, but regardless, I wasn’t expecting much to happen.
Also, I do find the following a bit suspect:
What’s more, the pandemic reshaped ideas about work and opened the door to work-from-home opportunities. Companies are slowly getting people back into the office, but working from a central location isn’t the necessity it once was for many. This means folks taking jobs in Silicon Valley don’t necessarily have to move as deep into the city as they once did, allowing them to live a bit further out from town and avoid the premium real estate market.
Wasn’t Google one of the numerous tech companies that demanded their employees to return back to office?

- Comment on Do you feel, as I do, that this adblocker ban by Youtube will harm all of Alphabet's companies? [discussion] 1 year ago:
Ah, I see. In that case, then yes, I would agree that the perception you just described would indeed raise the question of the Premium price, especially when compared to Disney and Amazon.
- Comment on Do you feel, as I do, that this adblocker ban by Youtube will harm all of Alphabet's companies? [discussion] 1 year ago:
Perhaps not, but I am not certain if “amateur” is the right word in describing the creator contents on YouTube. Certainly, we’re not talking Disney-level video quality, but most of the creators I follow appear to have some skill in AV recording and video editing. Plus, they do present some things that are of interest to a wide variety of audiences. Therefore, I don’t necessarily see such content as “amateur-created”. Now, that’s not to say there are no amateur-level content on YouTube. I’m sure there are plenty of contents that really are of poor quality and not worth your time and money.
Please be aware that I am not trying to convince you to jump onboard YouTube Premium. That’s your decision.
- Comment on Do you feel, as I do, that this adblocker ban by Youtube will harm all of Alphabet's companies? [discussion] 1 year ago:
Hmmm…well, their fight against the adblockers is quite concerning, especially if the ads are so intrusive that they disrupt the user experience in viewing content, thus pushing more users to get Premium or go to another platform. It’s not uncommon these days to find people migrating away from Big Tech platforms and going to other platforms that have more reasonable and sustainable services that benefit both the client and the vendor. The challenge is the content, which may not be as numerous as what you would find on YouTube, and along with that, there’s the challenge of convincing creators to go onto those other platforms.
But, I am doubtful that Alphabet will be financially impacted. They might see a loss around YouTube, but that loss could be offset by profits from other products in their portfolio. Furthermore, because they have a paid option, it wouldn’t be surprising to see people going for that option, especially if the cost is reasonable, and they are getting premium services not just for themselves but also their friends and family.
