The fact that some people are ok with, “subscriptions taking off” in this very post is troubling.
The future, where you own nothing, pay a subscription for everything.

I posted on Lemmy about needing recommendations for movies to watch on shrooms…and then minutes later stumble across this article.
Talk about perfect timing, lol.
This is really starting to feel like a perfect replacement for that…other website.

Hmm, your statement just made me ponder sort of the opposite…
I wonder if keeps any plans/videos on his phone of sites he has/is worked/working at.

That’s super interesting (given the post context).
I’m going to have to knock this out already then, I’m off work for a week. If I can finish The Hobbit in a day, I can do the same here!
Thank you for the response, I’ll try and report back if I actually keep up my current motivation.

I have a friend that uses Tiktok. He has never posted a video on there, just watches crap.
He went to bed one night in August and mentioned that overnight, as he slept, the Tiktok app sent/received 8.6 gbs of data as he slept, the app was closed, screen locked.
I can only imagine what the Tiktok app does if you have a son/daughter with Tiktok on their phone (whether you know or not) and work for a state/federal government.
My friend is a engineer too, still has it installed, not a stupid person by any means (well…). Very unsettling.

All valid points. Thanks for mentioning, “mortgage poor”. It’s amazing how many people think that’s the solution to rent…when you’re typically agreeing to pay, essentially rent, for 30 years.
An everyone who gets a mortgage, with rare exception, OF COURSE, believes it will be paid off well before they are anywhere near 30 years. Seemingly forgetting that health issues, social issues, weather events, etc are likely going to stop that from happening.
This post just keeps getting more bleak, lol…

Is this from Neuromancer per chance? I own the book and never read it.
I do not want to acknowledge how long I have owned it though, lol. It is crazy how things can end up backlogged.

It’s really sad that someone had the thought process of, “I bet we can convince people to live in these fucking things”. An despite this small bump in the road, it is seemingly working.
It’s disgusting how many people will leverage housing costs (especially in San Francisco) against their fellow (hu)man.
- Comment on amazon anti union posters put up by the company 1 year ago:
It is always the same tactic again and again and again. Constant variations of, “unions steal your money via dues and you have no guarantee of benefits then, but you do right now”.
It’s exhausting.
The same tactic, damn near the same words, are used for the same purpose since at least the 1800s. It works well enough that they just slightly modernize the language and that is that.

I remember reading about, “pod hotels” in Akiharbara, “Electric Town”, Japan in the late 90s or early 2000s. I recall them being marketed as a cheap way to see the neighborhood. Even back then, Akiharbara was the global epicenter of anime/manga, retro gaming, arcades, computer stores and repair shops.
Glad to see the concept has now evolved to, “dystopian hell” some 20 years later.

My System 76 laptop I bought a few years back is still alive and well. Ubuntu MATE or Manjaro I typically run now. Sometimes it makes me feel like a sellout running those distros. I know that’s a goofy thought. Is underdog syndome a thing? Ha.

We’re, “Glorified indentured servants”, 1800s USA Irish immigrant style.
…An I think that is the best case scenario.

- Comment on Windows 12 May Require a Subscription 1 year ago:
I have ran GNU/Linux since the early 1990s. Practically since it first existed. Distributions like MuLinux, Yellowdog Linux, Slackware, Debian, etc. This generally has lead to multiple difficulties. Sometimes I had to dual boot to get around said difficulties. Around 2010, I got good enough with WINE, software work arounds and alternatives that I didn’t need to dual boot anymore. I did like to play various games still back then, but around 2010 Valve’s GNU/Linux support was improving (unless my memory deceives me)
This post has made me feel that for the first time, all that struggle was worth it, heh.
On a side note, there’s some sort of dark irony with personal ownership dying under capitalism. I feel like the majority of us hate all these subscriptions models, but we keep playing along .vs. becoming cave hermits.

That is a really neat idea. I initially thought it was some form of rhythm game controller, when I first glanced at the photo of it.

I have watched so many retro gaming shows on TV, YouTube, etc and never knew or heard about this. The amount of odd controllers released in Japan must be endless.
Definitely interesting to know about.

I enjoyed/laughed at what I have watched. The Spock episode was great. Bloopers!
