Ads and subscription aside, any time there is a feature I like on YouTube, they remove it or change it. More often than not when they add a new feature, it makes the experience worse for me.
I understand they need to make money. I’m willing to sit through ads or pay a subscription for that. But the ads are constantly getting worse. Mid-roll ad breaks that are auto-generated into the video (for older videos, content creators would have to go through their library to manually change them, from what I understand). A push for censoring content to avoid demonetisation, even content not intended for children.
Yes, part of it is that I got used to YouTube in its early days when it was operating at a loss. When it was a wild west of content creation. But it just feels like it has become so unfriendly to users and content creators alike. It has become corporate and sterile, while trying to squeeze in revenue everywhere it can. (Likely to barely break even, sure, but they don’t have to make it crap to use to do that.)

Don’t even need XKCD for it. The monster self proclaims himself as Victor Frankenstein’s son, giving himself the Frankenstein surname and in another part is referred to as the new Adam. Adam Frankenstein is his name.
- Comment on Should I or should I not use/bother with using Linux? (READ THE WHOLE POST) 3 weeks ago:
I will add onto this, that you don’t need to be a programmer or understand how everything works to use the terminal. At first, it’s fine to copy the commands directly into the terminal without really knowing how it all works.
I would very highly suggest to be careful about doing this blindly, you can and will compromise or Bork your system doing this too haphazardly. But it’s fine to learn it piece by piece, looking at what commands do as you go to use them. Treat every command you copy paste into the terminal the same way you would treat a .exe file you download from the internet on Windows.
As you use the terminal more frequently, you’ll being to recognize different commands and what they do. You’ll even start figuring out shortcuts or variations of commands and variables that align more with how you use the computer and what you’re hoping the output to give you.
Linux Mint is a great place to play with this, because most everything has a GUI counterpart so you can see the difference between doing the same task with a GUI vs using the terminal. It is also able to live-boot from a USB, as others have pointed out, so you don’t need to worry about ruining your primary computer experience. I’d suggest trying this out before you build your new computer, just to see what it’s like.

Ah, fair! For me, the switching between music and oration would be a bigger distraction than one or the other on their own.

Genuine question, why not try different podcasts? There are a variety of subjects, and plenty that are current events/news related for niche communities. That doesn’t mix music between episodes, but let’s you find discussions on topics you’re interested in.

It was never about our speed, it was about our endurance and persistence. There’s no point in history where we were the fastest creature in the local food chain, a deer or Buffalo was going to sprint faster than us, but when they had to stop to cool off or recover from the fast burn of energy, we were right there, right behind them, still coming.

I grew up in an area that was fairly dark. Probably somewhere between Bortle class 3 and 4 when I was young.
When I went backpacking in the Rockies, it was like nothing I had ever seen before. The night sky is vast and beautiful, and so full of lights and color. Constellations are hard to make out because there are so many dots to look at, rather than the light being too faint to make out.

Either put both the coins and bills in your pocket together and sort it out later, or don’t pick your items up off the counter until you sort out your change.
Because even if they gave your paper bills back separate from the coins, if your other hand is so occupied with the items you purchased, how were you going to get the bills in your wallet anyway?

- Comment on Microsoft Edge experiment blocks access to settings if Windows 11 is not activated 6 months ago:
The OS itself is free to download and install, the activation key is what costs money. So technically, installing Windows isn’t a “pirated product” unless you dupe the activation, at which point it is activated and doesn’t run into this issue.
Second, there are plenty of situations where a legitimate user of Windows may find themselves no longer activated. Switching motherboards due to hardware failure or upgrading their system comes to mind as a big one. Imagine having paid for Windows, your motherboard fails, you replace the motherboard, and it turns out you had an OEM version of Windows and can no longer use that key to activate Windows on the new motherboard even when the rest of the system is the same hardware!
So yeah, sure, surprised Pikachu face if you pirate something and it doesn’t have the full functionality. Whatever. But more than just that demographic would be negatively affected by this.

It’s 100% this. Asking for a cut that’s super short, the hairsresser can always take more off but can’t add it back on. Either keep telling them “a little more off”, show them a picture of what you want (preferably a picture of yourself with the style from when you’ve previously had it done), or at the very least give them assurance not only that you are ok with the buzzer size you give them, but that it’s alright if it ends up shorter than expected.

The reason for the ratio is because this is very close to a pedophilia apologist viewpoint blurring the lines between attraction and consent. If they are an adult with the body of a twelve year old, why would another adult be sexually attracted to them (their body)? At what point is the line between respecting an individual’s autonomy to present as a minor, and sexually objectifying actual minors?
But that is why the downvotes. Because it is very easy to read the original post as “nah, it’s not pedophilia, they’re technically legal!”

It’s sad because even my friends that are knowledgeable in using Linux, or even a few friends that daily driver Linux, aren’t committed to gaming on Linux and keep a Windows box around for gaming…
I made the switch to fully Linux when I built my new PC, recently, and I haven’t had any more issues than I had encountered on Windows in years past. Maybe a little more configuration, but I very rarely stuck to default configuration with Windows, either.
Linux gaming has come so far in the last several years that it barely even feels different from Windows

- Comment on Why do (desktop) PC have so few USB ports ? 9 months ago:
This seems like a lot, though. Like, they are all reasonable items! But it seems more like a niche/enthusiasts situation, which would require a niche/enthusiasm solution.
Not saying it wouldn’t be nice to have more usb as standard, but most decent motherboards I’ve checked out have around 4 2.0 slots, 2-4 3.0 slots, and 0-2 C slots. Just for back panel I/O
6-ish slots seems fine for most uses
- Comment on Which option lads? 9 months ago:
Ok, so average restoration rate for adults over 18 during sleep peaks at 20 breaths per minute. That’s 1200 breaths per hour, and with a cushy 8 hours of sleep, that’s a whopping 9600 breaths while asleep, maximizing the average. That would net you $480 just for sleeping.
In comparison, on average at a 3 miles per hour pace, it takes 20 minutes to walk 2,252 steps. $480 would take 1,920 steps, and would take about 15.5 minutes to walk at the same pace.
So, 15 minutes of relaxed but purposeful walking would match the total amount you’d make on average for sleeping.

Perfect! I assumed those were the alternatives you’d meant, but without saying them I wasn’t sure.
- Comment on How do you refer to the lgbtq+ "community" least excludingly? 9 months ago:
I find that take very problematic. Not because of your opinion on who can or cannot use words like queer, but because you aren’t giving a meaningful alternative. What language should an ally use to avoid stepping on someone’s toes?
Personally, I think intent is very important in this sort of context, so I don’t see issue with words like queer when used earnestly in support. Though I know my experience isn’t universal, and I think OP sees that and is trying to be mindful.

I’ve not had bubble tea, so can’t comment Typically matcha powder is used in hot tea (with hot but not boiling water)
- Comment on Does matcha tea need to be combined with milk or can I use water? 11 months ago:
I had never heard of matcha tea with milk before, only matcha with water. I guess making a latte with matcha tea would use milk in it, but you are absolutely fine just using hot water, as that is the traditional method.
Cold brewing, though, I have no idea for.

I mean, that’s on you for abusing any power up. If you’re trying to rule the world, then sure you might run into some repercussions. If you’re just living your own life, knowing the best way to navigate any interaction with another person is powerful.
Any of the items could be abused in a way that would make enemies, and some of them have other drawbacks on top of that.
