I learned negative as being a separate operation where we need to apply the order of operations. I think it was something like : -2 is a diminutive for -1x2 so it uses the order of operations of a multiplication.
My calculator is the official one used in schools in France (ti-83 premium ce) and it says -2^2 = 4 with the negative key. I don’t think it would make a mistake in such a simple concept. But whatever these concepts can change depending on the field, country, level of education. What I mean is : it’s unclear, so use parentheses. So (-2)^2 or -(2^2) are the correct ways to write it.

Isn’t the “-” order of operations the same as a multiply ? I think I learned powers take priority over the “-” so your calculator would be right.
But either way if it can cause confusion you should use parentheses. - Comment on Absolute Win 8 months ago:

I’m not going to argue on who is worse, sorry, I’m not educated enough to convince someone. But yeah if you pin the middle east genocide to the us (which you should) it’s bad, and I don’t know how it compare to the Uyghur’s genocide.
Edit: I might also add the U.S. is currently undermining the Taiwanese people’s desire for strategic ambiguity. Putting its own geopolitical interests ahead of the desires and well-being of the Taiwanese people.
Just about that, isn’t China doing way more shit on that one ? I know most Taiwanese want the status quo but there are mass campain from China to take Taiwan, and I’ve never heard of the opposite.

China does sometimes engage in Chinese nationalism in a way that is worthy of criticism; but pretending they are worse than the U.S. in this regard is detached from reality.
Lmao

It still increase user experience so they would do it if it was easy. I definitly would like so.
Except if we go full conspiracy theory and maybe they don’t want poor people that won’t buy nitro on the platform, it’s possible. - Comment on Discord is on a quest to become a better messaging app 11 months ago:
Community and socials features exist since ages, I don’t think it’s going in a social media direction at all. I’ve never seen anyone using chats seriously for exemple.
But it indeed is getting worse as they add new features which clutter even more the interface. I don’t think the rework is better, but it wasn’t a downgrade either imo. (I didn’t see the window position and size thing, but closing steam takes 1 more click tho, this suck) - Comment on Discord is on a quest to become a better messaging app 11 months ago:

I didn’t know about that, sorry I missed it in you original comment. Then maybe theses frameworks are too young or have some kind of limitation, or just discord did not switch yet, but I hope they do. I know optimisation is not important for most company but if the switch is free they should do it.

It run fine on my 7 years old phone. Sure, native would be better, but electron mean they can make the website, the windows app and the android app all at one. So it’s worth it. Everyone on Lemmy is a programmer, so you should know how hard it is to support multiple version of a service with as much active developpement as discord.

Main function are ok, sure, but Steam still is is inconsistant, the 40 different css for buttons is not just a meme.
Same as discord it had a lot of feature creep over the years so it’s not easy to understand, but for me it’s worth giving up ease of use for theses features. - Comment on A bride to be discovers a reality bending mistake in Apple's computational photography 11 months ago:
It’s not the case as someone already explained, but also, who care about the photo being fake ? People take photos to show to other people and keep a memory, and that photo looking better than reality is usually not an issue. I would still prefer choice with a toggle somewhere, which we will never get with an Apple product.

- Comment on Over half of all tech industry workers view AI as overrated 11 months ago:
I believe I saw this kind of issues was because of the token system. Like if you tell him to find a word starting with a letter, he can’t really do it without hard coded workaround, because he doesn’t know about single letters, only about tokens which are parts of the sentence.
It’s definitly more complicated than that, but it doesn’t mean AI is bad, only that this current implementation can’t do theses kind of task. - Comment on Over half of all tech industry workers view AI as overrated 11 months ago:

A supercar cost a lot to construct but I’m pretty sure it’s worse for the environnement than a single nft (and don’t tell me it’s useful, in most case it will stay rotting in a garage)… A Birkin bag can cost 100.000+ which is league out of it’s construction cost… Heck, a signed baseball cost 5 bucks to make and can sell for 600.000. . Not everything has more fake value and effect on the environnement, but you can find worse thing for each aspects. Not saying nft are good, nft are trash, but it’s not a special kind of trash.
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
I hate to say this but cricket is right. The item being physical or not do not matter for this kind of show off purshase. A Rolex or Birkin has pratically no construction cost, same as an nft (relative to their selling price).
And I don’t understand the point about the environnement, are you saying nft are negative because of their environnemental impact while a Rolex is positive ? If so you I’m sure you can find plenty of status symbol item that pollute more than nft…Nft are still stupid and people at this party are probably insufferable tho.
