Ars is usually better than this. The title for this article makes no sense.
- Comment on What are your complaints about Lemmy? 5 weeks ago:
The opinion monoculture is not specific to Lemmy. Most social platforms, and even real life social circles, live in bubbles.
The Internet anonymity combined with the upvote incentives only make the problem worse.
I agree with your complaint but I don’t see it as something that can be fixed. We can all do our part to engage civilly and respectfully with others, but it won’t be enough to change the culture.

I notice this much less frequently as time went on. Reddit had the same trend in Digg era.

Third party mobile apps can also implement this, it doesn’t have to be done in Lemmy itself.

Even posts with 100 upvotes and zero comments have value. It’s a quick way for me to see what’s happening without having to check multiple sources. The comments are just a bonus.

This is app store competition does. Apple didn’t want an emulator-friendly app store to become super popular.

Executives care only about their bonuses, and the best way to boost them is to milk companies on the short term even if it ruins them on the long term. There is no incentive to care about long term.

- Comment on The New Audi A3 Is Amess With In-Car Subscriptions 1 month ago:
We already built the expensive Internet infrastructure that allows any digital media, including movies, to be delivered to your computer for virtually $0 extra cost. However, even though the infrastructure was built you are “not allowed” to access the digital media unless you pay some arbitrary price.
In your example, having a washer/fridge installed in the house is not that different from having an Internet router installed in your house. In both cases the infrastructure is readily available and costs nothing to use but you cannot access the services for artificial reasons.
I’m obviously not defending Audi as I think it’s a ridiculous concept but this is already happening at a large scale.

A choice screen is a baby step that’s not enough to level the playing field.

While Apple has many issues, their support of older phones is really good. You can replace the battery once and still use the same phone for at least 5-6 years.
My current phone is 4.5 years old and still going strong, with latest software versions.

Just like a movie is already available for download on the Internet but you must still pay to download it. Unless yarrr not a fan of artificial scarcity.
