My headcanon is that after world war 3 we lost track of time (for a while; survival was priority) and a lot of records were destroyed / reconstructed, so the dates become fuzzy after world war 3, and by the time of TNG and DS9 those fuzzy dates had become accepted as fact because they didn’t know any better. The eugenics wars haven’t happened on the canon dates, but whose to say they don’t actually happen 10 or 20 years from now? 😛
Real life example, our date system involves numbering based on the birth of somebody that almost certainly didn’t exist. It’s just widely accepted that Christ was born 2024 years ago. Or would it be 2025 years ago? I’m too tired to figure that out.

- Comment on Garak's time off 11 months ago:
But isn’t that at random? He’s a tailor at this point in the show, not an intelligence officer assassinating targets for his job. Doesn’t “I have a list of enemies and I might kill one of them” sound slightly psychopathic? Garak does come close to being revenge-driven when he reconnects with Tain and rejoins the Obsidian Order, stating he has people he wants to take care of (such as Dukat), but I don’t believe he outright says he’s going to kill them, it’s something much more subtle and discrete.
- Comment on Garak's time off 11 months ago:
I have to respectfully disagree (also I bloody love that we are debating the psychological nuances of a fictional character from a show that ended, what… 25-ish years ago?)
I can’t recall, off the top of my head, Garak ever telling a joke per se. He got his enjoyment out of subterfuge and misdirection - did he kill that ambassador or was he just a gardener, which was extra intriguing because earlier in the show you didn’t really know what his previous line of work was, you just had suspicions. But if he did then it was in the past and it was an assassination in line with his job. He can get off on hinting about that kind of thing, and his colleagues can go along with it, because it was in the past and it was a professional hit, so the people around him don’t have to worry about him doing the same to them. It’s like listening to vets tell war stories, even if they killed a whole lot of people you it was for their job and a good cause. They can even joke about it, because it’s in the past.
But in this joke it’s implying that he’s just going to kill somebody at random, because he hasn’t decide who that person is going to be. He isn’t in the Obsidian Order at this point, so he’s not assassinating to protect Cardassia. In Pale Moonlight he assassinates, openly even, but it’s for a good cause and it is indirectly sanctioned by Sisko. His style of humour was basically masterful (and kind of dark) trolling, not blunt “har har I’m going to kill someone” jokes. I guess you could infer that he might be killing someone in a professional context, and maybe there are multiple targets so he hasn’t decided which target to kill yet, but obviously it’s a short form meme so there isn’t room that kind of context. As is, it feels like a poor caricature of who the character really was.
That said, the joke is still funny and I have no idea why I’ve typed this much about a fucking meme instead of working 😂
- Comment on Garak's time off 11 months ago:
While I could hear “I haven’t decided yet” in Garak’s voice, and this is very funny, I don’t think it fits with in-universe Garak. He’s not a psychopath killing people at random — he had specific reasons to kill the people he did, and generally with surgical precision. I can’t see him planning to just kill someone for no particular reason.
(sorry for being that guy and criticising a joke)
(I still upvoted!)

Everyone is a friend until they’re not.
I am not blindly pro-anyone. I want everyone to be able to live in peace. I would give my life to save my Jewish (or Muslim) neighbours.
What I cannot abide is a massive online propaganda campaign orchestrated by a certain country’s military to try and sway world opinion in favour of a genocide they’re itching to commit in the name of self-defence. Now I’m not saying you’re definitely part of that, but all of the hallmarks are there.
Israelis deserve to live in peace, as do the Palestinians.

- Comment on Martin Scorsese urges filmmakers to fight comic book movie culture: ‘We’ve got to save cinema’ 1 year ago:
Hah. From your perspective sure, I’ll give you that. I don’t think subjective or objective “quality” is the sole criteria when comparing cinema, especially in this context where the article is talking about comic book movies versus the rest of cinema, but I am running on 4 hours of sleep so I wasn’t as clear I could have been, sorry. In this context, from my perspective, they are inherently comparable since they are in the same genre. I think we may also have slightly different applications of “comparable” here — maybe a regional language thing?
For the record I think the couple of Marvel movies I’ve seen have been vapid wastes of time that could have possibly been
writtenengineered by LLMs for maximum returns on investment. So I think we’re of a similar opinion and probably on the same side here. I still think mentioning Nolan in this context is hilariously hypocritical given he made some of the biggest comic book movies ever. I get the intent behind evoking Nolan’s quality filmmaking, still funny to me regardless. That said… Your messages come across as quite antagonistic. Why is that? I mean this quite sincerely: are you doing okay? It takes so much energy to be sour all of the time — I know from experience. Feel free to message me on here if you want to shoot the shit.

They are literally comparable as they are both in the same genre this article is about. You realise Batman is a comic book character, and that the article is about comic book movies, yeah? I said nothing about the quality between the two.

It’s kind of amusing that he mentioned Christopher Nolan as a possible ally in his grassroots campaign of filmmakers extolling the virtues of cinema. Christopher Nolan who made a massive comic book movie trilogy. That Christopher Nolan?

a) isn’t this nutbar still on YouTube, and thus not censored?
b) you shouldn’t be able to profit from spreading disinformation
c) laws regarding free speech / freedom of expression do not apply to private corporations such as Youtube
d) the timing of this is trying to imply Brand being demonitised and the recent sex pest allegations are both orchestrated by the UK government
e) this article seems just as nutty as Brand
Fuck the UK government, but also fuck Russell Brand.

- Comment on At least 5 people have been cured of HIV. Is the AIDS pandemic ending? 1 year ago:
As always, if a headline is in the form of a question, the answer is: No.
As it was a few years ago, the only “cure” is bone marrow transplants from somebody with the gene variant that is resistant to HIV. And bone marrow transplants, since in their application need to wipe out your existing immune system, are riskier than just continuing to be on ART.
The other potential cures in the article have only been tested on monkeys and mice, and even if they end up working on humans that’s many, many years away.
The article is kind of a waste of time if you already know about the bone marrow application, as expected. Actually, that’s kind of harsh, it’s mostly positive, which we need more of, but from a science news perspective there’s not much there.
