- Comment on Random Screenshots of my Games #4 - Class of '09 1 month ago:
It’s a good game. Just don’t take the content warning at the start lightly. I’ve tried to finish it twice but haven’t been able to get more than a couple of hours in.
- Comment on Zelda 64: Recompiled 3 months ago:
The ROM in this case is only used for game assets, like maps, models, and textures. All the game logic in native code. This allows is to be easily modified to add in new features without trying to hack it into a 20 year old game/console.
- Comment on Steam announces game recording beta. 4 months ago:
The page says it captures game audio only by default. But you can switch it to all audio if UPI want to capture something like external voice chat.
- Comment on Why I ditched Gmail for Proton Mail 6 months ago:
It certainly can be a bit involved. When I moved from Gmail address to my own personal domain I did it slowly over a few months.
I set my Gmail address to automatically forward to my new email address. Then I setup a quick filter which added a label on everything that had been forwarded. Once a week or so I would look at all the emails that had been forwarded and update them to my new email (or delete them if unwanted).

I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a torrent for it. They probably want a simple download button for the less technically inclined too.
- Comment on Importing Google Photos Takeout to Immich 8 months ago:
This was the tool I used. It worked great for me.
- Comment on What were some of your favourite Australian TV shos?w 8 months ago:
Oh, that’s a real shame. It’s been a while since I found it and grabbed some old shows not available anywhere else ( The Chaser, CNNNN, The Mole). Hopefully it makes a comeback at some point.

In case you weren’t aware “The Archive” runs a pretty substantial repository of Australian TV shows. r/DownUnderTv has instructions on how to get access.
- Comment on Google Photos Alternative 10 months ago:
Set Immich up a couple weeks ago and I’m surprised how good it is. Their docs included a simple cli tool to bulk import all my Google photos. Mobile app is working great. I’m really impressed with the search too.
- Comment on Australians’ tipping habits fail to keep up with rising restaurant prices, data reveals 11 months ago:
I’m surprised to hear it’s that high in Australia. I just got back from the US and it’s awful over there.
The last two times I remember tipping in Australia (excluding “keep the change”) was one for a local food truck I like during the pandemic lockdowns. The other was a few years before that at a restaurant after I told them we were there for my mum’s birthday to get a candle in the desert, the chef instead took her back into the kitchen and showed her how they prepared several of the dishes (and we got the candle).
- Comment on Google Authenticator Blamed to have made one company’s network breach much, much worse 1 year ago:
Yeah, I had one of the earlier ones Yubikeys without NFC. I remember having to get a USB mini to full USB converter and plug it into that to login to things like LastPass. Thankfully I only needed to do it once for the initial login.
- Comment on Google Authenticator Blamed to have made one company’s network breach much, much worse 1 year ago:
Yubikey and other hardware security keys now support NFC which makes the mobile support really good. A quick rap to the back of the phone and you’re done.
- Comment on What benefits do you get for being on-call? - programming.dev 1 year ago:
- We get paid $70 per weekday and $105 per weekend. I think it’s $140 for public holidays.
- Eh, it can be a bit annoying at times. It’s pretty easy to swap with people as needed. I believe we’re allowed to opt out of it too, some of the other devs have.
- Any time spent on incidents is rounded up to 15m. Which can make it feel quite unworth it if you get an alert in the middle of the night. Unsurprisingly since they reduced down from an hour it’s taken at least 16m to investigate any alert.
- We’ve got a decent number of people on rotation that I’m only on call about three weeks a year.

- Comment on Is this email compartmentalization idea bad? 1 year ago:
One thing to note is that SimpleLgoin (haven’t used AnonDady) is that it can generate different kinds of aliases.
One option allows you to specify the part of the email before the @. These will all use a common randomly generated sub domain. As these subdomains are assigned to individual users, you can correlate two aliases to the same user. It’s probably not picked us as easily as an exact match, but far from impossible.
Simple login does have the option to generate completely random emails which don’t use a common subdomain. This mixes your usage with every other user of the service.

7 Billion Humans and Human Resources Machine (same developer) are probably the most kid friendly ones I’ve played. TIS-100 I found quite fun, but it’s assembly like programming which might be a hard starting point for kids. Zachtronics also make some good games, but the ones I’ve played are more programming games masquerading as something else E.g. chemistry with SpaceChem.

There’s a bunch of great programming games available on Steam. A lot of them start pretty basic, so might be useful for teaching the basics and driving interest.
