Do you like all the trek? I thought Lower Decks and Discovery both started great but kind of fell off. I heard Picard was good.

This doesn’t actually answer the question.

Well, if your argument is: “any company that becomes a monopoly will abuse monopoly power”, then sure I agree with you. You got me there!
My argument is: “given a reliable financial alternative to advertising, a company will be able to resist enshitification for a long time, as long as there is no absolute tyrannical monopoly.”
I assumed the last part was implied and I’m sorry for the confusion!

You have to pay for kagi so they are not incentivized to serve ads. They are incentivized to give you a good set of search results so you keep paying.

If they put a letter for every sexuality that people identified with their would have hundreds of letters.

The right wingers are lagging behind then. Have you heard of QUILTBAG+? Queer unisex intersex lesbian trans bi asexual gay.

- Comment on LGBTQIA++ 1 year ago:
Yes but they aren’t getting first class representation so they keep adding letters to the acronym. It’s too bad literally no one outside the activists cares. Most of my LGBT+ friends think it’s a bit silly. Not horrible, not ridiculous, just a bit silly.
It’s certainly a thing the LGBT community is mocked for and it’s something that the vast majority of people just politely stay away from. That’s really too bad.

This is standard. You always get rid of the upper management. You give them a lot of money and a round of applause and then you put your own people in. Everyone at the top will be Microsoft.

Oh no! The country that stole a ton of shit suddenly is not so great now that they can’t steal more shit!
But really, they got all the global wealth and it made them rich. They thought they were rich because they were intrinsically great but really they were just propping themselves up. They thought they could brexit and retain their greatness but the EU wasn’t stifling them it was masking their decline.
- Comment on Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple 1 year ago:
In order to grow a chat app you need a consistent and stable interface over a long period of time. It can’t have too much bullshit in it either.
In order to grow your career at Google you need to build ridiculous shit and then leave once you get your promo. Entire departments get reorged so someone can hit their people manager quota.
Product groups, business units, “orgs”, VPs, SVPs, it’s all just a game and “everyone’s playing except you.” This is why Google kills shit. Because Google rewards behavior that results in killing shit.

Telemetry, in the context of software development and UX design, is either a decision by the misinformed or just an excuse to save costs by axing the Windows QA department.
That’s very silly. That’s actually such a ridiculous opinion I’m pretty sure you’ve left out some assumption that would make it make sense.

Except this isn’t 1982 and that computer is running Windows 11, not Multix. The CPU probably has at least 8 cores and the NIC can do at least a gigabit. A network retry is not going to matter.

I agree, it should be opt in. Where I disagree is with how strongly people react against it.
If you buy a car and it only comes with Bluetooth do you have a meltdown? Do you kick, scream, and cry that Big Car is going to steal your data? No that’s fucking ridiculous. But grown ass man children on Lemmy act that way when Microsoft wants to know how many gigs of ram they have.

Microsoft has more to lose than almost any other tech company. They also have more process, legal enforcement, and bureaucracy than most other tech companies.
There’s no fear of a lone engineer moving fast and breaking things at Microsoft. If someone at Microsoft had an idea for how they’d have to pass it through 5 chains of command, 2 tech orgs, and Legal just to begin the process.

- Comment on How can we see the Milky Way if we are inside of it? 1 year ago:
These analogy answers are weird and not helpful.
OP, they look through telescopes and figure out how far away the stars are. They record it in a little diagram on a computer and eventually they get a good idea of what it looks like from the outside.
- Comment on How can we see the Milky Way if we are inside of it? 1 year ago:
Wait we can know what it looks like though. They can plot the distance and position of the stars and then they will have a model of its shape as a point cloud.

That’s literally never happened to me but that won’t stop me from saying it.
