- Comment on Fusion 360 increasing annual price by $190 USD 11 months ago:
FreeCAD definitely has a steeper learning curve and a few rough edges, but to me it was absolutely worth it to learn. I really don’t like my files subject to the whims of Autodesk.
- Comment on what budget 3d printer would you suggest for a beginner? 1 year ago:
If your goal is to make mini figures, what you want is an SLA machine. They are much better at making small detailed objects than FFF. However, it will definitely cost more than a cheap FFF machine like an Ender 3.
The Ender 3 variants are cheap and a great platform if you are OK with tuning/tweaking things. If set up properly they work great and are pretty reliable. But of you want something that works out of the box and doesn’t need any tweaking/tuning, you will probably be disappointed with it.
- Comment on YouTube is increasing Premium prices in multiple countries, right after an ad-blocker crackdown | You either pay rightfully for the video content you consume, or you live with the ads. 1 year ago:
This is why Google has been using their browser monopoly to push their “Web Integrity API”. If that gets adopted, they can fully control the client side and prevent all ad blocking.
- Comment on ChatGPT's Scary Good at Getting People to Click Phishing Emails, IBM Finds 1 year ago:
No, it’s significant because attackers can pump out way more emails while also making them customized to their targets and constantly changing to help avoid detectors.
- Comment on Indian authorities raid fake tech support rings after tipoff from Amazon and Microsoft 1 year ago:
They almost certainly won’t. Every so often they make a big show of these raids and then quietly drop it later. Check out some of Jim Browning’s videos to see how the raids work out.
- Comment on It is 'nearly unavoidable' that AI will cause a financial crash within a decade, SEC head says 1 year ago:
Greatly increasing taxes for the super wealthy and closing tax loopholes would be a good start.
- Comment on Mathematician warns US spies may be weakening next-gen encryption 1 year ago:
Honestly, I think his communication here is fine. He’s probably going to offend some people at NIST, but it seems like he’s already tried the cooperative route and is now willing to burn some bridges to bring things to light.
It reads like he’s playing mathematics and not politics, which is exactly what you want from a cryptography researcher.
- Comment on Does anyone know how to create a 3D wireframe? 1 year ago:
Asking a wireframe modifier is pretty simple - I’m sure you’ll do fine with that.
If you want to get into modeling in blender, I highly recommend the donut tutorial series by blenderguru. It’s on YouTube.
- Comment on Does anyone know how to create a 3D wireframe? 1 year ago:

Alternatively, if you just want a render of it and not a 3D print, then there are also various ways to do it with shaders and renderer settings.
- Comment on Authors Are Furious After Finding Their Works on List of Books Used To Train AI 1 year ago:
What do you define as “source” for an AI model? Training code? Training data set?
- Comment on Modernizing an Ender 3 1 year ago:
Thanks - I didn’t realize that crtouch is optical.
- Comment on Help - Strange Extrusions 1 year ago:
Looks like it’s got a jam. Did you reduce retractions with the direct hotend? If not, you are probably retracting way too far, which will cause filament to solidify in the cold area and jam up.
- Comment on Modernizing an Ender 3 1 year ago:
The architecture is a bit different than octoprint. Fluidd and mainsail are purely client side UI’s, while Moonraker provides the server side API for them to connect to. So any additional server side functionality would need to integrate with Moonraker - not Fluidd/Mainsail.
A lot of functionality that is plugin based in octoprint is core to Moonraker and fluidd/mainsail. Things like cameras, mesh bed tools, gcode viewer, UI layout customization, power device control, etc are all included.
Spool manager is not something I’ve personally needed or used, but this would probably be a good option: github.com/Donkie/Spoolman
- Comment on Modernizing an Ender 3 1 year ago:
I highly recommend switching to fluidd or mainsail. They don’t require any more CPU power than octoprint (possibly a bit less, actually). They are more modern and polished interfaces than octoprint.
- Comment on Modernizing an Ender 3 1 year ago:
CR touch and BL touch are the same. It’s just creality’s name for it.
Inductive probes are probably the cheapest option. I paid around $5 for mine and it works great.
- Comment on Unity reportedly told dev Planned Parenthood and children's hospital are "not valid charities" 1 year ago:
That’s much easier said than done. For game developers that already have games based on unity released or in development, changing to another engine is an expensive and time consuming development effort.
- Comment on The enshittification marches on – use Signal [WhatsApp] 1 year ago:
Who ever said signal is anonymous? Secure, private, encrypted - yes. But definitely not anonymous.

- Comment on OpenAI confirms that AI writing detectors don’t work 1 year ago:
At a very high level, training is something like:
- generate some output
- give the output a score based on how much it looks like real human text
- adjust the parameters slightly to improve the score
- repeat
Step #2 is also exactly what an “AI detector” does. If someone is able to write code that reliably distinguishes between AI and human text, then AI developers would plug it in to that training step in order to improve their AI.
In other words, if some theoretical machine perfectly “knows” the difference between generated and human text, then the same machine can also be used to make text that is indistinguishable from human text.
- Comment on Sealing gaps in duct work letting out air 1 year ago:
Personally, I’d just slap some aluminum foil tape on there.
- Comment on First time with PETG. Is this calibration, wetness or something else? 1 year ago:
In my experience, moisture will cause excessive stringing in PETG long before it is saturated enough for popping/hissing.
- Comment on How would you fill these gaps? 1 year ago:
I’d probably go with some sort of split cover plate/flange (or a regular non-split one if you can disconnect it to feed it through). If you have access to a 3D printer, you can make one that way pretty easily. If not, you can probably find one at the hardware store or online that would work.
- Comment on What type of connector is this ? 1 year ago:
No. SAS is a different protocol and requires a different host controller. SAS controllers can typically handle SATA drives, but not the other way around.
If this is for a server or desktop machine, you could install a PCIe SAS HBA.
- Comment on How do you clean a smooth or textured PEI sheet? 1 year ago:
IPA for quick wipe-downs. Dish soap and water with a nylon scrub brush for occasional more thorough cleaning. I wipe with IPA after doing dish soap to ensure there’s no soap residue left.
Definitely no acetone.
