Considering there’s basically no chance of fucking up the gorilla, I don’t think you’d have to worry about the ethics of the situation.
- Comment on Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone 6 months ago:
Package managers was one of things that I had hard time adjusting to when I first adopted Linux, since I was so used to just searching for software on the internet, downloading, and installing it when I was using Windows. Now that I’m comfortable with a package manager, I find the Windows experience of installing software to be so much worse. It’s so much nicer to just install software using one or two commands in the terminal.
- Comment on Best printer 2024: a humorous critique of the Google search engine and printer enshittification 7 months ago:
Definitely look at the library. Mine allows me 20 free pages of B&W, or 10 pages of colour per month. After that it’s $0.10 for B&W and $0.20 for colour. Pretty hard to justify actually buying a printer to myself at this point. Definitely not as convenient as having a unit at home, though.

- Comment on Court Bans Use of 'AI-Enhanced' Video Evidence Because That's Not How AI Works 7 months ago:
It’s not only that everyone isn’t technologically literate enough to understand the limits of this technology - the AI companies are actively over-inflating their capabilities in order to attract investors. When the most accessible information about the topic is designed to get non-technically proficient investors on board with your company, of course the general public is going to get an overblown idea of what the technology can do.

- Comment on US lawmakers vote 50-0 to force sale of TikTok despite angry calls from users 8 months ago:
Why do you think that they give a shit about online privacy? This isn’t a privacy bill, it’s a bill stopping another government from doing exactly the same shit that the US government does through domestic apps. They aren’t looking out for people, they’re afraid of the competition.
- Comment on Thoughts on a few recent games 8 months ago:
Ghost Runner has many of the same aspects, and definitely scratches the same itch for me. It’s much more combat focused, but the combat actually feels like it was an intentional part of the game, at least.
- Comment on Thoughts on a few recent games 8 months ago:
If I’m remembering correctly, the game was originally designed to have no guns available to the player, but the team was pressured into adding the shooter mechanics later on. Ignoring guns is definitely the way to go with this game.

GTA V - Gold; seems to be playable for most people, with a few performance hiccups depending on your system.
Forza Horizon 5 - Silver; requires significant tinkering, but playable.
Doom Eternal - Gold; works well for most, but has some reported performance issues on some systems.
Horizon Zero Dawn - Gold
Cocoon - Platinum
Single player experiences like these aren’t typically where you find problems with linux gaming, however. Games with accompanying anti-cheat software, like competitive shooters, fighters, etc. are typically problematic. Competitive titles are the only reason I have a windows partition at this point.
Gaming on linux is more viable than ever, and becoming more and more stable all the time - mostly thanks to Valve. That being said, your experience will be dependent largely on your hardware. There are known issues with Nvidia cards on linux, because Nvidia refuses to cooperate with the FOSS community, but even those issues seem to be easing up (although to be fair I don’t follow this topic closely, as I have an AMD system). Anyone telling you there are no issues is lying to you, but so is anyone who tries to tell you that linux gaming is still borked. Do your research if you’re interested in switching, and determine if the games you play are well supported or not. In the end if there is one game holding you back from switching and you want to switch, it’s always an option to keep a windows partition around as a backup for games that don’t play nice with linux.

Would be good if this soon becomes a drop in replacement option for older EVs that are nearing EOL on their batteries and require new ones anyway.
Can’t wait for carmakers to fight tooth and nail to avoid making this a possibility for aging vehicles.
- Comment on What's your big "Oh, THAT'S how I do that" moment? 9 months ago:
Definitely shield dropping in smash bros melee. Seemed like an essentially impossibly difficult skill, and nearly made me stop playing because I don’t have the time to invest into that kind of tech skills just to be competitive. But then I had my eureka moment when I learned that you can get your shield up and not roll if you just have the stick to the right or left when you press shield in the first place. After that it’s just dropping the stick down one notch and you’re dropping like no tomorrow. Bit of practice to get the timing down and now I’ve unlocked an entirely new dimension of my play.
Yet another reason I cannot stop playing melee. Every time I think I’ve figured that game out, it reveals an entirely new level of depth that was invisible before I had the tech to see it.
- Comment on Sony is erasing digital libraries that were supposed to be accessible “forever” 9 months ago:
It’s entirely unreasonable to assume that the average person has the time or knowledge necessary to read, comprehend and agree to every terms of service agreement shoved in their face. Legislation should reflect this fact, and there should be something similar to game and movie ratings that give an easy to understand summary of the agreement.

- Comment on Browser maker love-in snubs Google-shunned JPEG XL 9 months ago:
“Overall, we don’t see JPEG-XL performing enough better than its closest competitors (like AVIF) to justify addition on that basis alone,” said Martin Thomson, distinguished engineer at Mozilla, last year. “Similarly, its feature advancements don’t distinguish it above the collection of formats that are already included in the platform.”
So is this a legit take on the technology? Sounds like an expert in the field is pretty convinced that this file format isn’t really worth it’s weight. What does JXL give the web that other file formats don’t?

- Comment on America Is Missing Out on the Best Electric Cars: Whatever kind of EV you might want, chances are China has it. 9 months ago:
As a professional car reviewer, I couldn’t travel to test-drive interesting cars during the early pandemic, so I did the next best thing: went to the website Alibaba, and bought a Changli. After I paid $2,000 for shipping and customs, the car arrived at my doorstep months later in a massive cardboard box.
But if you’re hoping that you might be able to buy these cars like you do so many other Chinese-made gadgets, keep dreaming.

- Comment on Google Search Really Has Gotten Worse, Researchers Find 9 months ago:
I hear this a lot, but I changed from google to DDG about a year ago and haven’t even considered looking back. I can find everything I need quite easily and can only think of maybe a handful of times that I have had to resort to using a bang to try and find something using another search engine. I’m very curious what the difference is between my experience and that of others who have problems DDG.
- Comment on Unity bans VLC from Unity Store. 10 months ago:
This is a good policy, but it’s not always that simple for people who have been making games on the engine. Many people have spent years of their lives working on projects using Unity, or have already released products using Unity which they are now supporting. Changing a project to another game engine is a massive undertaking, so Unity has a semi-captive consumer base in the short term.
- Comment on Video game actors speak out after union announces AI voice deal 10 months ago:
In my mind, they should be paying the actor the same for the new lines regardless of whether they opt for them to come back in and re-record or use AI to generate the new line. The actor’s product (their voice) isn’t worth any less, but the company could save money by streamlining the creation of a new line through simplified logistics. This way the company has some benefit while preserving the actor’s livelihood.
Of course there’s no way these companies are going to want to pay full price for these new lines, since it’s an obvious point where they can pressure performers to accept a lower rate.
