- Comment on Silly question for those comming from a iPhone. Do you miss imessage or was it not that big of a deal? 11 months ago:
The main culprit was in the rest of the world sms is very expensive meaning people early on where forced and got used to third party apps. In US by contrast sms is usually free/unlimited. As such people initially didn’t bother using thirdparty apps and when apple rolled out imessage the default sms app kinda became a pseudo standard (like whatsapp).
At least thats one theory

I’m not sure if your located in US, but an issue here is there a lot of people using iphones and a lot of them tend stick to the default messaging app and sometimes can rarley use 3rdparty messaging apps.
For android users the gripe can be since people socially to use thirdparty messangers (its like trying to convince people to use signal over whatsapp). As a result sometimes a good portion of your chats can be stuck in sms.
Group chats are a bit more of a pain since say all your friends are iphone users (and say they already have existing group chats) adding a android user will either not be possible or kick everyones chats back to sms. The biggest problem with the latter is carriers have different limits on number of participants for sms chats.

Silly question if you don’t mind me asking, when you got the pop up:
- Which browser/adblocker where you using (also did you use any custom filters)?
- What device are you watching youtube on when you saw the block (windows, macos, ios, android, linux)?
- Where are you located? (like which country)
I never saw these popups just curious.
Also my setups using a web browser (no issues):
- (Mac OS Soma) Firefox Stable with ublock origen stock filters
- (iPadOS 17) with adguard safari content blocker stock filters
Setups with third part clients (no issues):
- Revanced android
- Smarttube (Fire TV)
- YTLitePlus (iPadOS)

- Comment on 'FUCK SPEZ': Reddit Users Unite to Turn r/Place Mural Into a Protest 1 year ago:
I see it as pointless and potential risks tarnishing the image that third party apps helped improve reddit (especially to normies/non techies who only use the official app and website).
What I don’t get is what will damaging the ipo achieve now that a lot of 3rd party apps are toast (Apollo, rif, reddit sync). Even if spez or reddit as a whole did a full 180 nothing would change on the prospect of 3rdparty apps.
Only thing reddit can change is improving the first party app and mod tools (given their stance was the api was never meant for 3rdparty apps after flip flopping).
As a user you have more or less 5 options:
-
completely switch to Lemmy (or similar alternative).
-
use the official reddit app and deal with it
-
use social media less (pull the plug overall per say)
-
Use a paid subscription 3rd party app (example infinity for reddit
-
use a modded version of 3rdparty apps with custom api or the official reddit app modded (ex vanced)
I hope this comment doesn’t come of too corporate or shill like

Kinda a weird question regarding DoH on android. Is there a way to have DoH bypass certain local domains without implementing it router level.
For example at home devices use a prefix like router.example.com or homeassistant.example.com (on internal lan). Some services on the domain are portforwarded while others are only available via internal net this causes issues when trying to acess internal devices.
On ios (in NextDNS specifically) there is an excluded domains feature which allows this. Unfortunatley android doesn’t seem to have a similar option
- Comment on federation not completely syncing 1 year ago:
Kinda a follow up your theory about a rate limit seems to be spot on was checking my subscriptions and noticed the upvote counts were stuck at 0 or -1 while cross comparing to the larger remote instance they are (50-100).
After the update however vote counts seem to be working for newer posts recieved after the update
Probably fix is due to new changes in 0.18.2 which dynamically increase and decrease workers on demand

Gotcha thanks for the clarification.
- Comment on federation not completely syncing 1 year ago:
By rate limits do you other instances limiting the amount of content that can be synced (ex lemmy.world) or bookworm unable to sync due to high load (not sure how much bandwidth, storage, and cou resources federation takes).
