Pure gold! Imagine how difficult it was to make hundred of people to stand still holding a train-like weight over their heads to capture it on prehistoric camera 😅
- Comment on The good it promises, the harm it does (Part 1: Introduction) - Reflective altruism 1 year ago:
Ai summary
The article discusses the concept of effective altruism and its potential harm. It argues that while effective altruism promises to do good, it can also cause harm by creating a culture of utilitarianism that values efficiency over empathy and ignores the needs and perspectives of marginalized communities. The article suggests that effective altruism should be approached with caution and a critical eye towards its potential consequences.

FYI all those posts are done by a single bot. You can block it yourself and won’t see any more posts from that instance. Cheers!

Folks, can we simply uncheck option “[x] Show Bot Accounts” in new user profiles by default?
- Comment on Opinions wanted: defederating with bot spam instances 1 year ago:
Firstly, I totally understand people who find reposts annoying and I have blocked few of those because they’re simply irrelevant to me
lemmit online / hackernews reposts
-
those help drive inspiration for post making: I can snatch best ideas and post my own version on lemmy
It’s especially helpful when you’re maintaining inactive community where you’re the only poster. Inactive subs are seen as dead ones. -
not my use case, but I see those instances as ability to combat FOMO for the users who just switched over to lemmy and getting use to its quirks. No need to snoop to reddit if its content is in your feed either way
-
if you see lemmit online posts then someone on your instance wants this content/subscribed to it – it doesn’t appear out of nowhere
controversial opinion
tbh I wish each lemmy sub would have its own bot to post content stolen from other places of internet. Almost all popular websites have ones and they do bring large audiences. Be it just memes, science news or animal photos: people stick with a website because they can regularly get their dopamine hit. “Normal people” i.e. lurkers usually don’t care about post originality. People simply want enough good quality content
QoL bots
- tldr bots are generally helpful for long reads\vids and I wish they would be available as option on post creation page
- bots for linking to invidious instances / archive.ph nonpaywalled articles: just saves time
P.S. as a bonus here’s a page about bots that wikipedia uses to streamline and automate work Wikipedia bots - Wikipedia

User of those bots here:
I think this whole problem stems from the lack of tools to configure bot experience. On mastodon, for example, bots can post “unlisted” posts – which don’t show up in the main feed. Only subscribed people receive their posts. On Lemmy there’s no such privacy toggle and admins are forced to shoot a fly with cruise missiles – by defederating instances
I’d understand if you folks decide to defederate from bot instances however I’d urge you to escalate this discussion upstream to LemmyNet github for following features
- post privacy i.e. intended reach
- moderation tools to handle bots activity en masse
This would be far more lasting impact on quality of global fediverse feed and efficient use of admins’ time IMO

- Migrating communities to another instance
- Ability to subscribe to communities in bulk
- Notification for new communities on particular instance
- subscribe to post replies when you’re not the poster
- mentions by username notification
- subscribed + local/feed together
- local/all feed without subscribed
- mark as read on posts

It seems like you wouldn't have asked that question if your network worked flawlessly. Saving bandwidth on local network seems like a weird saving on its own.
So I imagine that you might be suffering from a more fundamental problem: like having a low end router that you push to self-host and cater to a family of wireless devices at the same time.
Am just speculating of course. Could you tell us why are you chasing to reduce power of 5-20 watt device?

- Comment on What good psychogy youtube channels do you follow? 2 years ago:
It depends 😄
There are a lot of channels explaining and helping to deal with a particular disorder like ADHD or schizophrenia
"Living well with schizophrenia" is probably my favourite even though I don't have schizophrenia.
There are channels specializing in particular treatment like cognitive behavior therapy
And there are channels giving a simple advice on interpersonal relationships
Kinda important to know what you're looking for
