But my real favourite tragic anime is Your Lie in April. Does it have the best writing though? I mean, they signpost the ending in the OP of the first cour. That’s not very good. Love it to death though. A close second is Angel Beats!, but the ending kinda confused me a bit. That’s gonna be the honourable mention.

Since you mentioned YLIA, the ending really resonated on me on a personal better? Like yours, the writing isn’t the best, though it’s up there. The tragic-related subplot in A Place Further Than The Universe is written better. Clannad is too convoluted. I wouldn’t consider Takopi’s Original Sin either because of its ending. Steins;Gate? Yeah, sure, because I’m an OkaMayu shipper, but the multiple worldlines in that story makes the tragedy less clearcut.

That leaves a clear winner of “best tragic storytelling” after some thought: Maquia. All of the movie led up to its climax, and it paid off hard.

She’s a well-written villain that’s easy to hate. She’s perhaps the most evil character in Bandori. And I already thought several in AveMyGo were already quite dysfunctional

I’m invested on what would happen to Viola in the end. The episode showed how, thanks to her, she engineered a rift between Arale and La La La La Girls, and also between Arale and Ritsu. Bad things tend to happen if things did not go her way there.

I gotta say, yuri fans are eating good these past few seasons.

I think Bandori hit just the right spot with the character dynamics of the four. Arale seems to be in the spectrum, but a functional one. She had a bad experience in the online world and her being canceled messed up with her self-esteem.

Nonoka is the MVP with her helping her bandmates. I like her sleepylike, slow voice. Reminds me of Moca.

Arale and her bandmates stumbled themselves into creating a band without meaning to and are contractually obligated to create songs as a result. Each member is a social media celebrity in their own right, and can practice together in a shared VR space.

In contrast to her VR persona, Arale IRL is an adorkable girlfailure <3. The first half of the episode is kira-kira doki-doki, but her meeting Ritsu (Clematis) and her classmate touches on Arale’s darker past. Arale talks quite a bit more than Anon, lol.

Am I seeing this correctly? A new World Masterpiece Theater-style anime (just) before GTA 6?

Was not disappointed with this adaptation. The pace slowed down after Episode 5, but it picked up again in this setup for the next arc. The whole animation is pure cinema, never missed, and is up there with the best of the medium. Ghibli in TV form. English Dub is decidedly superior from the Japanese. I had to check the Brimmed Cap’s VA (it’s Kellen Goff), because I thought he was Mark Hamill reprising his Joker performance. Simply outstanding.

I expect the second season to begin with a gold experience, literally.
