Dokapon Kingdom
It’s like Mario Party, but with RPG elements. Start with classes like warrior, mage, and thief, and more classes unlock later on. You use dice to decide how many spaces you move around the map, and fight bandits and orcs and stuff. Every now and then the king/princess will give a quest to go and take back some stolen things from a bandit. First person that can land on that space fights the bandit to get the loot back, and then you have to bring it back to the castle. Other players can land on your tile and fight you to steal the loot. Towns around the map have a boss monster and if you can kill it you “control” the town and get passive income, other players can steal the town for you. Mario Party is known for ending friendships, but it doesn’t even compare to the levels of cutthroat betrayal that happen in Dokapon. 10/10 highly recommend

- Comment on Console(s) to TV 1 week ago:
At the moment, I have a N64 modded with a PixelFx HDMI converter, a GameCube with a MKII EON which is just a composite to HDMI converter that plugs into the back, and a PS2 with a really shitty standard composite to HDMI converter that is powered by one of the PS2’s USB ports. All of those, and a couple of non-retro consoles, feed into a 7x1 HDMI switch and then into the TV. And the TV outputs all the audio to a sound bar. I just finished modding the N64, but I have another PixelFx for the PS2 because the lag of the converter is really starting to piss me off, and an untouched Wii sitting in the closet.
Modding the consoles is just what I prefer so that they work on modern TVs, and it gives me something to tinker around with. The problem with that route is that the mods can be expensive, paying someone to install them is really fucking expensive, and even if you have the know-how to install them yourself there is still a chance you can brick your console (there is also the rotting carcass of an Xbox in my closet, but we don’t mention it after 3 years of headaches). However, you said that you already have a TV with composite and component hookups, and it looks like there are composite and component switches like what I am using for my HDMIs. That would probably be the best way to go for you, and it looks like you could get one for about $30 USD. I dunno if a switch will degrade the signal quality at all, but I haven’t noticed any with my HDMI switch and I think I got mine for around $40 USD. When it comes to quality… Look, the consoles and their games are dated. No amount of lossless converting or upscaling is going to make them look like a game on the PS5 or Xbox Series SSX Tricky whatever the fuck it’s called. You’ve got some consoles and a TV that you can plug them directly into, that’s about as good as it’s going to get without diving through a trash heap to find a CRT. If you do end up getting a component/composite switch, maybe get 1 OSSC between the switch and the TV if you really want one. You don’t have to spend tons of money on something because some nerd on reddit insists it the “best and only way to experience retro games” just do whatever works best for you and remember to have fun

The first game I ever sat down and played for extended periods of time and the first game I ever completed was Majora’s Mask on the N64. It was and still is such a weird game from the town and the people living in it, to the masks, the Moon, and Skull Kid. I loved every little piece of this world, but the constant counting down to the end of the world and the reactions of all the characters when the end was near scared me. It made me anxious, stressed, and fucking terrified, but I would always go back to it. I honestly don’t remember how long it took me to finish it, maybe a couple months, maybe the better part of a year, but eventually I did finish it. And it literally felt like the weight of the Moon was lifted from my shoulders, I was excited and relieved and… I literally cannot explain the mix of emotions lil 6 year old me felt in that moment, but it’s what really made me interested in video games.
A couple of years later, a cousin gifted me a copy of Halo CE. Instantly became obsessed with it. My parents’ computer at the time was absolute dogshit (we didn’t really have much use for a computer anyway) and we only had dial up internet for maybe 2 years (we didn’t have much use for the internet either lol) but that didn’t stop me from playing both the single player and multiplayer as much as I could. Fast forward about 2 decades, and in college one of my friends starts playing Halo CE out of nowhere. It was also a cracked copy of the game so it very quickly got floated around to everyone in our friend group. We would have little lan parties to play games and in Halo we would play 3v4 or 3v3 matches, but everyone quickly started to see a pattern. Whoever played on a team with me would win, and I would always be on the top of the scoreboard by like 10 kills. Everybody decided to do me a favor (gang up on me) and humble me (wipe the smug look off my face) by tricking me into a 5v1 match. I won. We played two more games like that, cuz the first one had to be a fluke. I won those as well. I don’t know if I held onto those Halo skills and muscle memory for that 2 fucking decades, but at the time I was also feeding a pretty bad CSGO addiction, but ya know. It’s what it’s. And that’s why I can’t play fps games against my friends, because I was playing at a completely different skill level and it felt like I was bullying them 💜

Raccoin is a coin pusher rougelike. I thought the game was out in early access or it had a demo, but it turns out they just did a play test for August. Hope it gets the full release soon, it was pretty fun

- Comment on Weekly Recommendations Thread: What are you playing this week? 2 months ago:
I went through a fucking spree earlier this week. Finished Metaphor: ReFantazio last weekend. It’s an RPG from Atlus, basically a fantasy Persona. Would recommend if you like those games. I also played through Lunistice, which is a short little platformer game. Only has a handful of levels, but fun and worth it for $5. Then I went into Mouthwashing blind and finished it in a single night. I knew absolutely nothing about that one except that I had only heard good things about it. Very good, but holy fucking shit is it heavy. Wanna recommend it, but it’s one of those games where you need to stare at a wall for a couple of hours to process everything it throws at you. And I’ve since started Shapez 2. An automation game like Factorio or Satisfactory, but it’s just Shapez. It makes the good chemicals in the brain go brrrrr. Would also recommend.

- Comment on Left 4 Dead creator teasing new four player co-op shooter 2 months ago:
I got B4B because some friends and I were really into L4D2. The cards were cool and different and I can appreciate that they tried something new. But they would regularly need anything that worked or was fun into the ground, which really sucked because it was a PvE game. And they changed the game so that you would start a campaign with your entire deck, and didn’t balance any of the early levels since they were designed to give a single card per level or segment or whatever they were called. I really wanted to like the game, but I just couldn’t

That sounds awesome. However, I only have one alt account and I moderate a single community where 90% of the posts are made by me. I don’t think I would get much use out of lemmy-know or the Docker image. I’ll be sure to keep those in mind though if I see any one else having these issues
- Comment on Reports not federating from lemmy.world 2 months ago:
Yeah, it’s a known issue that mod reports don’t federate between instances well (if at all). It was recommended to me to make an alt account on lemmy world, give it mod privileges, and just check that account as often as you feel is necessary. It’s kinda a pain in the ass, but it could be worse
