He was a part of the story. The book The Founders goes into the beginnings of PayPal, Ebay, the other players, Elon being brought in, and Elon’s origins. A good read and it’s not all about Musk.
- Comment on Trying to avoid US elections content as a non-US citizen. Is this possible on the default Lemmy-UI? I prefer it over Tesseract, Photon, Alexandrite and Voyager (which have built-in keyword filters) 4 weeks ago:
There doesn’t seem to be as much overflowing into non political communities here as at reddit where it’s just overflowing everywhere I find. I think it’s a reflecting of the anxiety many are feeling about the election. Hopefully it dies down in a couple of weeks.

- Comment on Google now offers ‘web’ search — and an AI opt-out button 6 months ago:
I’ve been becoming irritated lately with search in other apps being taken over by their flavor of AI. I use the Microsoft Swift keyboard on my phone and it’s now trying to inject their AI search results over my Google searches in Firefox and the results take me to Bing.
Then today I was watching a video on Instagram and the screen went off. I lost of the video as the app refreshed when I turned on the screen again. I tried to search for it but now IG search has been turned into a Meta AI search. It offers AI answers instead of the videos I was looking and it seems like it’s the only option.
WTF are they messing up search across the platforms? Get off my lawn!

There’s public washrooms like this in a mall in Seattle, or at least there was a few years back. Half height stalls. When one is sitting the walls only come up to your elbows. One of the most bizarre setups for a public bathroom I’ve seen in my travels.

Yes correct. This is what was suggested for NHL94.
I never really made it into the the Playstation or Xbox controllers. I wasn’t a big gamer beyond the NHL series in my teen years as I was playing a lot of hockey then I was married at the start of my 20s and things changed quick.

- Comment on What's the best way to protect outdoor faucets in the winter? 10 months ago:
For me coming from the Westcoast with lots of rain at sea level the lack of drain fields around the houses in the Prairies was a similar moment for me when I was looking at homes for a move many years ago. Their drain spouts just run out into the yard above the ground. It was a what the heck is going on here?
Their basements are also fully enclosed under ground. On the coast we require a secondary drain field just for the down spouts and the basements are only halfway in the ground so it was very strange to me.

I have to wonder what the scar lines from the various transplants and hair tucks would look like.
I’ve read he’s had a lot done to close the gap and make the George Constanza Ceasar’s crown into a full head of hair. That’s a lot of ground to pull up over. I don’t think it would look so smooth.
I can’t even imagine how much time he needs to spend each morning to get that thing ready for the public. That’s a lot of hairspray. Combine that with the orange spray tan and the makeup it’s not a 5 minute job.

There was another article on this decrying the limit of a 2 hour window for the black box data and how it isn’t enough time in situations like this to provide more data as it is overwritten every 2 hours. Some are pushing for 17 hours instead.

Yes most management falls into this category. If you ain’t running a prison with the staff something is wrong as we can’t possibly trust these people!

Love these. Reminds my of the CD drive cup holder and my personal favorite at my shop was the computer was afraid of me. Every time I came near to fix the problem they were having it went away.
- Comment on Chick-Fil-A staff in the rain. 10 months ago:
Kind of reminds me of Dutch Bros. Coffee. They have people out in the line for the drive thru with iPad taking orders. By the time you get to the window the orders are ready for pickup.
- Comment on Chick-Fil-A staff in the rain. 10 months ago:
The early days of drive in was waiting in your car in the parking lot and wait for a server to come out to you to take your order. Then they return to your car with the food for you to eat in your car in the parking lot. They often had trays that hooked into your window or trays that would sit in your lap to eat from. This food was diner style food and wasn’t quick to make like fast food today is.
These styles of restaurants fell out of style when cheap quick fast food came along and many of these old style restaurants went under and disappeared.
The ones that didn’t line. A&W adopted the eat inside model with a drive thru window for pickup.
Then there are chains like Sonic in the US that have this old style pull up parking and a drive thru.
I assume this Chick Fil place is doing something similar or they are just delivering food during the pandemic to people that preordered ahead of time in the rain.

Oddly I’m learning the Trump crowd really wants to employ these tactics today with glee against all those that won’t shut up about everything they don’t like.

- Comment on US pay-TV subscriber base eroding at record pace 10 months ago:
Coming up to 16 years since I cut the cord and hardly anyone I know that is younger has cable. It’s internet and then streaming.
My father when he passed in 2013 was paying $160/mth for old HD cable for his old 35" RCA tube set before I bought him a LCD TV that required a upgrade to modern HD channels. He didn’t have internet with that either. So while they were scamming him for this old 480p HD packages he wasn’t alone I’m sure.
I will say at new year’s I was at someone’s place that only had internet and for the group of us he brought out a HD Amazon antenna to watch the ball drop at midnight on local broadcast TV.
The amount of commercials was jarring. I’m not looking forward to when they bring those to streaming services that are currently hemorrhaging billions.
