I only use my kuru toga when writing in Japanese, I normally just use a pen for english.

Why write, when typing is faster? Even a phone keyboard is better than a pencil.
While this is certainly the case for english, it does not apply to every language. especially those with a lot of characters like Japanese.
You also remember stuff better when writing it down, and some people just prefer it.

I think people use the sharpwriter because US standardized testing requires a #2 pencil and the sharpwriters are cheap.

If you feel they are unreliable, it may just be that you aren’t using good ones. I use 3 on a regular basis and never have issues with feeding or lead breaking; I also only have to refill it every few weeks.

This is not true. According to a 2022 Press Releases , Apple has 900 million paid subscriptions across ALL Apple services. Many of which are App Store-based subscriptions for third party services. It also including things like Apple Care and Apple Financial Services.
