It doesn’t really bother me tbh.
KDE’s Discover app pulls from the distro package manager, snap, and flat hub. AppImages to me are like “portable” executables and don’t really need an app store. However you can use Gear Lever to update them.

I know this will usually draw the ire of more experienced users (yes I use Arch btw) but if you really want an install that is as hands-off and foolproof as possible you are generally gonna be better off with an Ubuntu distro.
I put Kubuntu on PCs for beginners/noobs because it gives them access to more advanced options while also typically being fully functional out of the box.
Ubuntu distros typically have extensive hardware support and a lot of testing. Yeah it’s not going to be the most cutting-edge but you don’t want that, you want it to “just work”

I like LibreOffice but if your goal is MS Office compatibility you are better off trying OnlyOffice

- Comment on Public DNS server with gui 9 months ago:
I use a DNS server on my local network, and then I also use Tailscale.
I have my private DNS server configured in tailscale so whether on or off my local network everything uses my DNS server.
This way I don’t have to change any DNS settings no matter where I am and all my domains work properly.
The other advantage is you can configure the reverse proxy of some services to only accept connections originating from your tailscale network to effectively make them only privately accessible or behave differently when accessed from specific devices

Just the number of people staying in the road while cars all sliding all over like Disney on Ice is crazy.
You aren’t helping, get out of the way and let god sort it out before you get run over!

Do you have some kind of timelapse plugin enabled?
- Comment on Noob question about PiHole 10 months ago:
Another cool trick is using tailscale to ensure your portable devices always can access your Pihole(s) from anywhere and then setting those tailscale addresses as your DNS servers in tailscale.
This way you can always use your DNS from anywhere, even on cell data or on public networks
- Comment on Self hosted browser IDE that supports C# and runs on Windows 10 months ago:
And as many others have mentioned, it can be self-hosted as well.
- Comment on Noob question about PiHole 10 months ago:
Yeah this is what I do.
Putting Cloudflare as my secondary would allow some requests to get through and then often the device whose requests went to Cloudflare would continue using Cloudflare for a while.
The best solution I found was to run a second Pihole and use it as the secondary.
You can use something like orbital sync to keep them syncronized
- Comment on Discord Servers asking for Phone Numbers and 'Verification Levels' 10 months ago:
I came across this issue on my own discord server, the system kinda encourages you towards those higher security levels without really being especially clear about what it will do to the user experience.
One thing I would clear up though:
I think both sides in the OP are correct here.
Yes, the server admin sets the security level that triggers those requirements.
But it’s also true that the server does not get your phone number, that private information is only kept within discord’s verification system, not sent to the server admins.
- Comment on How often do you back up? 10 months ago:
It depends what I’m backing up and where it’s backing up to.
I do local/lan backups at a much higher rate because there’s more bandwidth to spare and effectively free storage. So for those as often as every 10 mins if there are changes to back up.
For less critical things and/or cloud backups I have a less frequent schedule as losing more time on those is less critical and it costs more to store on the cloud.
I use Kopia for backups on all my servers and desktop/laptop.
I’ve been very happy with it, it’s FOSS and it saved my ass when Windows Update corrupted my bitlocker disk

- Comment on Google Photos Alternative 10 months ago:
It’s not a Windows app.
You can run it on Windows with Docker, but I would suggest a Linux server and a reverse proxy for the best experience (like most self-host solutions)
- Comment on Google Photos Alternative 10 months ago:
Definitely Immich.
There’s a lot of these kinds of services, hosted or self-hosted that are labeled as a “Google Photos replacement”
But very few of said services have features like face matching and object recognition alongside automatic backups.
IMO it’s not a legitimate replacement for Google Photos without those features and Immich really delivers on that without compromising your privacy.

At least the multiplayer got attention, the single-player game never got anything after the initial release.

That’s why I said “if it’s properly following the standard”
Those devices that Benson tested that failed were not properly following the standard.

- Comment on The EU common charger : USB-C 10 months ago:
The Framework Laptop 16 has a 180W PD charger. It’s not the full 240W but it’s using that new standard and the laptop will work with 240W chargers when they hit the market.
- Comment on The EU common charger : USB-C 10 months ago:
No device that is properly following the USB standard will be fried by, or fry, another USB device.
It’s true that a USB-C cable might not work with some PD requirements and will support only a certain USB data version or lower, but all of USB is backwards compatible, you will get slower speeds or less power but not anything dangerous.
Unless the device(s) you use are not properly following the USB standards
