  One is that I can keep family email (everyone on the server) in the same ecosystem, so private information send between family members isn’t as likely to leak.

  Another is also privacy – my mail isn’t being used to build a profile about me.

  I also like the control and the ability to look at logs. If I don’t get an email, I can look at the server and figure out why it didn’t show up. It just provides more information for me.

  I’ve been using my own cloud-hosted SMTP relay and Zimbra server for over a decade now, and I love it.

  There can be a bit of a learning curve, and in some cases sites won’t accept mail from cloud-hosted domains. I add those domains to a rule in sendmail that sends those domains through Amazon SES, and then they get accepted.

  If you do go this route, just make sure that your recovery emails or 2FA for things like your registrar go somewhere else. If your cloud provider pulls the plug on you or something you don’t want to be stuck waiting for an email that can’t arrive.

  I love the level of control that I have over my email and wouldn’t have it any other way.

  tl;dr: steep learning curve, but worth it in the long run. Keep gmail as a recovery/2FA account or something, though.

  To me, I feel like this is a problem perpetuated by management. I see it on the system administration side as well – they don’t care if people understand why a tool works; they just want someone who can run it. If there’s no free thought the people are interchangeable and easily replaced.

  I often see it farmed out to vendors when actual thought is required, and it’s maddening.

  No, we will never be an oligarchy. A plutocracy, yes, but I think money is the deciding factor here.

  Which women? What are their voting records? What experience do they have? Can they work with the other party if they need to? Are they respected by foreign leaders?

  If it’s this election, are we sure putting them on the ticket will survive certain legal challenges?

  Generally speaking though, no, I don’t think it would happen. I would totally support it, but I think there are too many misogynists out there. On the other hand, I never thought there would be a Black president either.

  I have a problem with Amazon Drive going away for non-photos on December 31st.

  For a while, they had unlimited storage and you could use a Linux API to access it – I stored 8TB of data.

  Then they set a quota, but for those over quota it was read-only. Oh, and Linux access no longer works.

  Now they’ve set a deadline to have everything off by December 31st, but the Windows app still doesn’t work (constantly crashing) and I see no way to get my files.

  I started back with kernel 0.12 and called it Line-ucks. I still do and people look at me funny, but it’s an old habit and I’m an old dog.

  When Linux released his audio file it was already etched into my brain the other way. I do remember being joking that I’m glad his name wasn’t Pinus (like the genus for pine trees) after hearing him say it.

  I have one set up as an irrigation controller. I was going to build an OpenStack cluster to test configuration settings on (I run a production cluster at work), but gave up when the supply chain problems happened and prices skyrocketed.

  Thank you. I hadn’t considered the payment part. The cloud system that I manage is in education, so everyone pays in advance.

  This makes sense, and I’ll start with a lower number and ask it to go up later. It will take a couple of months to migrate everything from Linode anyhow, so I don’t need them all at once.

  My identity infrastructure alone uses a whole bunch of servers.

  There are the three Kerberos servers, the two clusters of multiple LDAP servers behind HAProxy, the rabbitmq servers to pass requests around, the web servers also balanced/HA behind HAProxy… For me, service reliability and security are two of the biggest factors, so I isolate services and use HA when available.

  I told them everything that I wrote here in my original request – I need 25 now, but would like a quota of 50 to maintain elasticity, testing, etc.

  They followed up with the request for actual resources needed.

  I haven’t answered since then.
