- Comment on Concerns Raised Over Bitwarden Moving Further Away From Open-Source 4 weeks ago:
Ah yeah, the fun of how that works. I recall that I had previously set up WebDAV to try to simplify my source of truth but I think that was just with the original KeePass app, not KeePassXC. I also wasn’t trying to share passwords among multiple people but I do recall having issues when I was using Dropbox to sync to my phone since I would have to actually make sure Dropbox had updated the copy of the file which required me opening the app at the time.
- Comment on Concerns Raised Over Bitwarden Moving Further Away From Open-Source 4 weeks ago:
As someone who used to use KeePass, went to LastPass, and then Bitwarden (Vaultwarden), I finally got my non-tech literate wife to use Bitwarden. I’m concerned that KeePass might end up being more difficult if it comes down to it. I believe that KeePass had some sort of browser integration but it really has been a long time since I used it so who knows the current state. Curious how browser integration is today.

I was team classic theme for a long time. I forget the tool I used but the ability to customize the look of XP was awesome as I had a nice toolbar and start menu theme.

Funny that predictive text seems to be more advanced in this instance but I suppose this is one of those scenarios that you want to make sure you get right.

When you came to space dock here, did you notice a sign out in front of my station that said “Dead Romulan Storage”?

I wish that I, as the server admin, could opt out all of my users from this on their behalf. Shot like this should be opt in and it is seriously fucked up to enable by default, porn or not.

The biggest challenge I feel is actually knowing where to go to diffuse the bombs. As a kid, I could pretty much beat dam level on the first try after I knew where I was going.
- Comment on No, Okta, senior management, not an errant employee, caused you to get hacked 1 year ago:
Based on a few DNS lookups, I see that Okta likely uses GSuite. Would it still be possible the block non-work related Google logins at the firewall level? Seems that would complicate things quite a bit.

I would also second Hugo which I use for my personal site and blog which I haven’t updated for a long time. Nice thing is that it has a minimal footprint of needing to watch out for updates unlike something like Wordpress which was known for being vulnerable stable if left unmaintained. Another popular options is Jekyll and I honestly can’t remember why I picked Hugo over it.
- Comment on Microsoft now pops up a poll asking why you'd want to use another browser when you download Chrome 1 year ago:
I share the same sentiment. The push of having Bing crap all over the place with the inability to make the browser more vanilla is just a turn off for me. As a former and technically current Chrome user, I have found the overall user interface to be pleasant and easy to use. At work, Chrome is the preferred browser so I continue to use it there but for personal use, I moved to Firefox. It’s definitely taken an adjustment to get used to a few small differences but I haven’t hit anything that breaks my experience to need to go back to Chrome yet after a few months on Firefox. The ability to customize Firefox to the level of detail that’s possible is pretty impressive. While I don’t go crazy with customizations because I feel it potentially adds to future tech debt I don’t want to deal with as things change in Firefox, I like having the option.

- Comment on Local repository for Linux packages 1 year ago:
I use apt cacher ng. Most of my use case though is for caching of packages related to Docker image builds as I build up to 200+ images daily. In reality, I have aggressive image caching so I don’t actually build that many each day but my stats are impressive. 8.1 GB of data fetched from the internet but 108 GB served from the acng instance.

Battery life tends to be the one things I really look forward to with a new phone these days. Instead of paying to replace my battery, I just sell my phone and get a new one.
- Comment on What is your contingency for when the ISP goes down? 1 year ago:
I have two internet connections - one is fiber and the other is cable. My cable is the backup connection and is a lower tier offering with a 1.2 TB/month cap while my primary fiber is 1gig symmetrical with no data cap. I use pfsense to handle failover in case of an outage.
- Comment on Why Is Computer Security Advice So Confusing? 1 year ago:
It’s pretty amazing how many people still remember and reuse passwords for everything. I think it is still as simple as people haven’t heard of password managers or they’re just too overwhelmed with adding all of their passwords to a password manager and then changing them to something unique.
- Comment on Space junk is on the rise, and no one is in charge of cleaning it up | There are at least 100 bags of human waste on the surface of the Moon. 1 year ago:
In all likelihood, it’s actually quite literally just in bags sitting on the moon as I am pretty sure that at least the early LM designs didn’t have external storage compartments where it could be stored in considering the ascent stages left the moon.
- Comment on Chrome extension maker tells of pressure to sell out 1 year ago:
And even if they could get $240k the first year, the chances of people abandoning an extension because they are now getting spammed with ads/spyware seems like quite a factor. If my ad blocker started reporting my browser history, I would be dropping that thing like a bad habit.
- Comment on YouTube’s anti-ad blocking test gets even pushier with a new timer 1 year ago:
I mean, if it is an ad that actually directly gets the video creator paid, I’m not even mad about those, especially when it’s quality content. Not a fan of those who just take common searches for questions online and create a long video to explain the answer when it should have just stayed as a stackoverflow question and answer or something.
- Comment on Verizon Fails Again, Shutters Attempted Zoom Alternative BlueJeans After Paying $400 Million For It 1 year ago:
We used BlueJeans at the startup I worked for starting in 2014. At some point a few years in, we switched to Zoom. I distinctly remember BlueJeans absolutely tearing through my laptop’s battery and the fan going into full hover mode. I was so glad to be rid of that thing.
- Comment on What is your gaming "comfort food" and why? 1 year ago:
Older: Command and Conquer Generals. I’ve started playing it with my kid which is fun. Newer: Rocket League. It’s been fun especially when I stop caring about ranking up. It’s just a game and I can play for 10 minutes and walk away.
- Comment on Hiw do you observe your server funktions? 1 year ago:
I’m in a similar boat except I just do everything on standard Docker containers but so do use Telegraf, Influx, and Grafana for everything. I’ve gone mostly to Discord notifications on any alerts. If I run into any problem scenarios, I figure out how to monitor it and add it via Telegraf and add an alert. I’m still just using Grafana alerts but it works fine for my home lab.
Even better if I can automate fixes to those problems.
- Comment on Did anyone here ever actually fully pay for BMG or Columbia House? 1 year ago:
We didn’t have many CDs even after CD players had become pretty popular so we had Columbia House. We would typically the the 3 CDs that you bought for a special price from a catalog and nothing more. It was helpful in getting a decent collection pretty quickly though. Almost all of my CDs as a kid came from them.
