I was thinking the same thing - it’d be nice if they could just keep doing what they’re doing now since it’s great, but who knows, maybe this will lead to some other great films that otherwise never would have been made. If they can maintain their quality in the big budget space, there’s a relatively unfilled niche for popcorn flicks made with care and artistry.
Off the top of my head, Mad Max: Fury Road fits the description of ‘big budget, action, based on existing IP’ and I don’t think anyone would wish that hadn’t been made.
Maybe they will start producing garbage; it’s entirely possible. I’d rather have a little optimism and wait to hate until it actually happens though. It’d be awesome to see what passionate and talented filmmakers like the Daniels would do with both a big budget and the creative freedom A24 has historically offered.

For some reason this movie never quite worked for me. It’s the exact sort of movie I usually love, and no doubt many of my favorite movies were inspired by it, but there’s something about the characters and interactions that makes it hard for me to connect. The mood of it is great though.

- Comment on Becoming widely defederated 1 year ago:
This is unfortunate. I’m pretty split so I guess just consider this a non-vote.
On the one hand, I don’t interact with/consume any ‘loli’ or related content here; plus there doesn’t seem to be any on this instance directly anyway, so no existing communities or users would need to be removed. But I interact mostly with communities on instances that have now defederated or likely will because of it being allowed. So practically speaking, I don’t really benefit from the loli rule, and my usage is heavily disrupted by the effects it has on federation.
On the other hand, changing the rules here because of other instances’ rules really just doesn’t sit well. I joined this instance because well-administered online spaces with positive vibes that are reasonably accepting of varied minority interests and views are as rare as they are pleasant; it would be a shame for one of the few loli-friendly instances to be pushed into conforming to the average, snuffing out one more spark of individualism and bringing the fediverse one step closer to homogeneity.
I’m disappointed in the defederations, but I can’t really blame the admins considering how Lemmy functions; Lemmy is where the fault really lies, the way I see it. The lack of hard boundary between local communities and remote communities in hosting content, plus the lack of any way to make a community or instance invisible by default means remote content has little practical difference from local. It makes sense that instances would only want to federate with other instances with similar rules considering that.
I love the idea of Lemmy - there’s a reason it’s the first social platform I’ve used in years - but as time goes on, the ripple effects of its quirks and missing features are pushing it into ‘not worth the frustration’ territory for me considering what I want from it: decoupled platform and user, where with one account I can interact with communities with all sorts of rules and values (which I’m happy to abide by of course) without having to fully agree with them myself. That’s not really how it’s shaping up. Whatever happens wrt the proposed rule change, going forward I think I’ll be limiting my interactions on the Lemmyverse to communities on this instance and a select few on friendly instances.

The Quiet Girl. Absolutely enthralling despite the slow pace and, well, quiet. One of my favorite movies of the past few years.

Great movie! As long as I can remember my family’s had it on VHS (then DVD), I must have seen it dozens of times over the years. Obviously I think it holds up lol but nice to hear it actually does.
Yes Man is my other favorite Jim Carrey movie, probably in part because he plays it somewhat serious too (though not as serious as Truman Show). It got middling reviews but I enjoyed it quite a bit - the comedy is a little more subtle than what you expect when you hear the premise and lead actor, but it works, and the romance elements are nice in it too. No masterpiece but worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something light and fun.

- Comment on "Housework Counts As Exercise!" 1 year ago:
I can’t say I’ve ever thought about it one way or another, but I don’t really feel physically exhausted or sore after housework, so I guess I wouldn’t consider it exercise? For me at least, I don’t mean to say anyone is wrong for thinking otherwise. I dunno, I sweep, mop, clean the bathroom, do the dishes, all the normal housework stuff - it’s definitely more strenuous than not doing anything, but in my mind there’s a place between exercise and sitting which is where housework kinda falls.
Though the linked article includes some yardwork like raking, weeding and mowing the lawn, which definitely feel more like exercise to me. I guess it’s probably relevant that I live in a house on the smaller side with a yard on the bigger side, so there’s a lot more work to do outside than inside. I can stay on top of house stuff with an hour here and there while outdoor stuff is basically endless.
- Comment on This one-page calendar will change how you view the year 1 year ago:
I’d say I primarily use a calendar for seeing which day of the week is which calendar date. I typically don’t have too much scheduled in the next ~two weeks at any time to keep in my head, in the form of day of the week now that I think about it. I usually use a calendar to check if there’s anything further out than that and convert it to e.g. ‘next thursday’ to remember.
It sounds like you use a calendar much more than I do, I check mine once every couple weeks at most tbh. I might be the outlier here though, who knows.
- Comment on Is there a game that you've been very patient for, which turned out to be dissappointing when you finally started playing it? 1 year ago:
The biggest issues have already been mentioned by others but I’d just like to add - there’s a lot more climbing in Forbidden West, but the mechanics feel a lot worse (to me anyway). I found the climbing in HZD boring but serviceable; in HFW it just feels awful, Aloy never does what I want her to do and I regularly plunge to my doom for unknown reasons. Also the pullcaster (basically a grappling hook) is super clunky to use and adds essentially nothing gameplay-wise, just some random superfluous interaction points. It feels like there might have been some cut content there.
I enjoyed Zero Dawn quite a bit - the hunting and fighting mechanics in particular - but Forbidden West is kind of a sidegrade at best. It just feels like a sequel for the sake of a sequel.

Huh, same here! I have it on GBA and have been periodically playing it since I was a kid, but I’ve never actually been more than 2/3 or so in. I was never able to put my finger on why - it seems like an amazing game with its charming aesthetic, good controls, it does a lot of things well - but now that you say it I think you’re right, the level design and emphasis on checking every nook and cranny really does make it kind of a slog. I just booted up my last save and played a bit of the next level, and the amount of backtracking, secret side areas, and mini puzzles is kinda overwhelming.

Lol, I enjoyed the game overall but that really is a perfect description of it’s biggest problem. It could have been so much more if they had been willing to take a risk and make it a little less game-y.
- Comment on Is there a game that you've been very patient for, which turned out to be dissappointing when you finally started playing it? 1 year ago:
Same here! It seems like a great game otherwise, but I just couldn’t get immersed in it because of the controls. Didn’t feel like I was playing as Arthur so much as watching him and hoping he’d do what I want.

Thank you for the explanation! That’s wild, I’ve certainly visited SPA sites but I’ve never given much thought to what must be happening under the hood there. I guess it has its use cases but from a user’s pov the quirks can be kinda annoying. Case in point, I see why

wouldn’t either (and thanks again)! - Comment on Do posts from instances that don't allow downvotes have an unfair advantage? 1 year ago:
I use the mobile site, so this is perfect! I’d been through the settings but totally missed that checkbox. Thank you!
It’s funny, I vaguely remember having comments sorted differently by default too, but I can’t seem to find any actual record of it. Mandela effect? Anyway, I’m hoping the option will be added soon, since I can’t get it to work quite right with a script:
window.addEventListener("load", function(event) { document.querySelector('[id$="-new"]').click(); })
This only seems to work when the page is refreshed for some reason. If you or anyone else happens to know a solution that’d be greatly appreciated, I don’t know javascript well.

I’ve been coming to realize how much votes affect the way I interact on Lemmy (and not in a good way). They have their utility of course, but if you’re sorting by new anyway they don’t really have an effect other than, like you said, giving a score to everything everyone says - which I’d really rather not be a part of my interactions as I find it does more harm than good to my mental and emotional state. I hadn’t considered just hiding them entirely though, thanks for bringing that up as a possibility. What do you use to do that? Don’t suppose it’s anything that would work on mobile too?
- Comment on People Want To Use Things But Not Own The Consequences Of Its Use. 1 year ago:
If you’re implying that the belief that companies should be held accountable for their actions and that communication platforms should be democratized is mutually exclusive from not villainizing people for wanting to communicate with their loved ones, I strongly disagree.
I’m not making excuses for the companies. I’m making excuses for the people at their mercy, who are just trying to survive with the hand they were dealt. People can’t be blamed for following the path of least resistance; the blame lies squarely with the path and those who made it, and fighting the people on that path who would gladly follow another is counterproductive.
- Comment on People Want To Use Things But Not Own The Consequences Of Its Use. 1 year ago:
Social media’s whole thing is the social aspect - if a community and/or its users are entrenched somewhere, they’re not likely to move because a minority has issues with the platform. It’s not unreasonable to want people to move away from Facebook/etc., but it’s not really true to say that’s a choice everyone has, if friends, family, and the communities or activities someone wants to engage with are there; if the options are communicating with loved ones on an ‘unethical’ platform or not communicating with them at all, it’s unreasonable and unfair to expect everyone to choose the latter.
- Comment on lemmy.blahaj.zone has defederated from us - Lemmy NSFW 1 year ago:
So blahaj.zone defederated a whole instance because one community on lemmynsfw has pictures of (verified) adults that don’t look adult enough? That seems… extreme, and rather insulting to the women whose bodies/appearances are supposedly too close to actual children to be worthy of attraction. Glad that’s not my instance, though to each their own.

I think the point they were making was that someone whose home, safety, or means of income were damaged or destroyed would have a different perspective than someone who wasn’t adversely affected, regardless of the big picture.

- Comment on Make sure not to underestimate the brilliance of 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' as it proves to be an exceptional movie! 1 year ago:
Great analysis! Once again I see it differently but it’s always cool to hear other perspectives.
I would agree that the protagonist’s journey is often a primary part of a good film, but it’s far from always the primary part of a good film. To me Evelyn and her arc filled a role closer to Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean, or whats-his-face (the main guy, not Fred Rogers) from A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. They’re the focal point of the story and are what drive it forward, but even though they have the most screentime the most interesting thing about them is their interaction with a ‘side’ character as a foil. While everything you describe regarding Evelyn and trying to support someone you care about are undoubtedly significant parts of the movie, they’re not what make the movie stand out to me, and not what I would use to describe the ‘point’ of it.
Like you said, Joy and Evelyn wrestling with similar issues creates a great dynamic, where each offer different perspectives and challenges to the other. Where it sounds like you found Joy and her role in the movie to be more of a support in the main story of Evelyn’s journey, to me Evelyn’s side of things was more the lens through which to view the central story of the everything bagel. I see Evelyn’s progression as being metaphor for how depression and nihilism creep in. Every part of her journey is another way you keep trying to fight it off, either internally or as help from loved ones, but things keep escalating no matter what you do until you end up at the bagel. The everything bagel’s appearance and the Joy/Jobu reveal is the realization of what’s been happening. From there it’s less about the characters and more just the fundamental fight between the parts of us that can see a way of existing in the world and the parts of us that can’t, whether those parts come from within or from loved ones.
To be clear I’m not trying to imply what you wrote is wrong in any way; I just thought it was interesting how, if I was asked to describe the movie’s point, I would have given an answer more about the overall story and bagel-adjacent stuff than Evelyn’s character arc. Our own experiences with the subject matter of the movie no doubt color our interpretations of what parts seem more ‘important’ than others. We can both be right :)

Interesting, my main takeaways aren’t quite the same as yours! I can see what you describe too, but I would have summarized it very differently. I didn’t see Evelyn’s character growth and internal acceptance as a primary part of the film so much as a necessary story step in becoming the philosophical foil of Joy. I’m guessing Joy’s arc is what you mean by the other really heavy point.
One thing I’ve noticed with this movie is that people experience it in very different ways, it resonates with a lot of people but there’s a lot of variation in what exactly they get from it and how they interpret its message. It’s really impressive how they were able to make it as universally enjoyable as they did, bringing together so many different themes coherently.

You’re definitely not the only one. I was baffled by the good reviews considering how little enjoyment I got out of it. I even watched it twice, because it felt like if I disliked it that much I must be missing something! I think the comedy just didn’t land for me - not my type of humor - and without that there’s not much to stay engaged with.

That’s useful too, but sometimes it’s hard to find them by keyword. Plus if the answer to a post is ‘there is no community’ and the post gets popular, it can be a nice way to kickstart the creation of a new community.
