Well it isn’t going to get done by itself
- Comment on Microsoft reportedly mulls ad-infested free Xbox Cloud Gaming plan — Game Pass Ultimate subscriber allegedly catches ad during game loading 2 days ago:
Gonna take the time to plug network-wide ad blocking with Pi-hole or something similar.
- Comment on what's a good answer to placate the c-suite if you're accused of lacking motivation and being unfriendly? 2 days ago:
Of course lol obviously I want a team member that works hard and is motivated. But also, people can change. Things happen in their lives that change their motivations and needs.
If they just want money, that’s fine, but I’ve seen and experienced how pushing someone who is working decently (or great, even) can cause their performance to tank if they didn’t want to be pushed in first place.
Managing large teams is less about managing their work and more about managing the people so that they can work more effectively.

I don’t control the hiring process and I don’t control the incoming members of my team, so don’t assume I’m an idiot. My team has excellent performance and I was able to get approval for my team to grow from 30 to 60+ people.
IDK why you assume I don’t try to encourage my team, honestly. We get good results so I reward them well. If we performed poorly, I would have a different approach.

I’ve been in a management role for the past 3yrs. I always tell my team that I don’t expect more than the minimum stated in our job responsibilities, that I expect us to work as a team when needed, to maintain a moderate balance between their work and their lives, and to try and maintain a positive attitude.
Work sucks, but I want my team to be happy. None of us want to be working, but none of us want to be miserable, either.
- Comment on THEY'RE EVOLVING 4 days ago:
Yeah, never heard them called mud bees. Only ever heard them as dirt / mud daubers, and they’re very obviously wasps.
They don’t hurt as much as you’d think, but you’ll still feel it for a day or two

Actually, please don’t. It’s Lemmy and we need all the users we can get

People liked Kirk will see that quote and say things like, “See, not every belief is equal and not every belief should be defended, that’s how we got to this point.” The mental gymnastics is incredible
- Comment on What percentage of the world population ages 30+ do you suppose is capable of financially supporting themselves & living & thriving independently? 3 weeks ago:
Personally, I think very few people in life are truly independent and never need help or assistance with something. As far as thriving, I know few people that aren’t struggling with their finances, health, or something else.
As a child, I thought life would be hard but ultimately a good experience. The older I become, the more I believe my subjective experience is bleak but with good moments.

If I was lucky enough to be so accurate to fall past an event horizon, I’d love it. But I’d also worry my perception of time would change such that my death would feel infinite. I would be equally excited and terrified

- Comment on Used cars under $20K have almost vanished from the market 2 months ago:
The headline is very shameless clickbait. Headline should read: Majority of used cars 3yrs old or younger are selling for >$20,000.
Economic reporting suffers from many of the same issues that scientific reporting does in that the headlines are a general idea of the research, blown out of proportion at best, and misleading at worst.

Too late, I studied Finance and National Economics and work in Logistics. Space and evolution are my biggest interests outside of that, though
- Comment on The various species before the first couple extinction events must have been fascinating 2 months ago:
During and prior to the Cambrian explosion, before living organisms as a whole had experienced so many bottlenecks and evolutionary shocks, imagine what little guys were swimming around.

- Comment on Nvidia becomes first company to reach $4tn in market value 2 months ago:
If they had more companies to compete with, then more taxes would be paid. But, regardless of how many competitors they have, if they paid more taxes then they wouldn’t have quite the market value that they do.
The whole reason these companies have such insane market values is because they’ve spent so much time and money artificially inflating their stock prices and by raising the barriers for entry into their industries

This is why the US desperately needs progressive antitrust legislation
- Comment on The Developer Behind The Alters Confirms They Used Generative AI And Explains Their Use 2 months ago:
This article is worthless. They stated how it could be the end of the studio and how it’s telling for the industry, but they go on to say the studio literally only used it to do last-minute translations for Korean and Brazilian-Portuguese prior to launch before having a team refine and complete the translations post-launch. There’s no real story here. It isn’t like they used generative AI to help code or model something
- Comment on HELP! Im looking for a game like CIV 6 where the point is to go to war 5 months ago:
Op, this is it. The franchise has been around for decades and covers many historical eras. Recently they got into fantasy and did pretty well with it. The overall gameplay is similar across each game, but the mechanics and ai behavior vary wildly across titles. If you don’t like one game, pick up another and you’ll probably love it
- Comment on What's the point of /c/economics? 5 months ago:
I think this community would serve well as a general community for economics, with pinned discussions for theory, policy, trends, etc. I think that would provide a lot of meaningful engagement and prevent a lot of posts boiling down to redundant or biased comments. I see too many economic discussions on Lemmy as a whole that don’t focus enough on data and the context around it, or that quickly devolve into just policy.
- Comment on What is the progressives current platform? What is the oldest example of the progressive platform thst you know of? 5 months ago:
While the American Left has been shifting right for the past few decades, were you even around during W. Bush’s presidency? Progressive today want exactly what W. Bush campaigned against - proper climate policies and social / welfare safety nets.
