Undertale is the obvious suggestion, although it’s more deconstructive than Earthbound.

Dragon Quest has lost both its composer and its designer within two and a half years. I assume Dragon Quest XII is far enough along to complete and release, but this might be the end of the series.

Chrono Trigger is around 25 hours for a casual playthrough. Great game with a very fast pace for its genre but it seems way too long for OP.
- Comment on Arizona's solar-over-canal project will tackle its major drought issue 7 months ago:
The US has lots of land that doesn’t require irrigation, but also lots of land that can grow crops if irrigated. Some of that land in California is some of the best farmland in the whole country, growing things that prefer California’s Mediterranean climate (similar to parts of Australia’s southwest coast).
We have the technology and have had it for a while. But we don’t have the laws and habits of dry countries so US water laws are a wasteful mess.
- Comment on Arizona's solar-over-canal project will tackle its major drought issue 7 months ago:
An irrigation canal like this is a big ditch to move water from a river to near farm fields. Without the extra water taken from the river, there wouldn’t be enough water in the soil for crops to grow in the area.
Being a big ditch open to the sky, the hot sun and dry air make a bunch of the irrigation water evaporate before it even gets to the field. So we went to all the effort of taking water out of the river just to waste it humidifying the nearby air.
Why did we do it in the first place? Because it’s way easier and cheaper to dig a ditch than to lay a big pipe, and I don’t know if the US had any other water-delivery tech at the right scale when these were built.
- Comment on This new macOS malware could leave you severely short-changed | TechRadar 7 months ago:
This title is a play on words, meaning “leave Mac owners short change”. That is, not having as many coins as they assumed they had. Usually you are short change because you had a little less money with you than you thought, but with malware involved they mean theft.
It’s difficult. I didn’t understand the headline until reading the summary.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars might work. It’s going to be difficult (fear the spear) and you’ll want to use those items, but it is overall easier than Chrono Trigger. And it has a remake coming out soon with some system changes.
Otherwise, possibly the very easiest remakes of old games like the Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster.
- Comment on he finished Paper Mario 64 7 months ago:
Dragon Quest is the OG for a reason. The remakes are a lot less grindy and don’t use ye olde Englysshe so they would be easier to read but less educational.

- Comment on Google Podcasts to shut down in 2024 with listeners migrated to YouTube Music 8 months ago:
Seems to vary depending on whether I’m attempting to listen to music on my device (“attempting to” is the right word as it takes 15 seconds to load each individual song as it goes through a playlist) or listen to a YouTube video. It can go further into the background if it’s music on my device, no further back than a big window drawn over the screen if it’s a podcastable video, and must be in the foreground for a video IIRC.

DQ5 wasn’t the first generation game or the first monster-catching game, but it was one of the earlier games to offer either and AFAIK the first game to offer both.

That looks like the point. They brought in using health to boost and spinning from F-Zero X, so just surviving to the finish line takes some skill and discipline.

If you have one part of the Masamune, go to Porre and ask around.
If you have two parts of the Masamune, an in-game cutscene told you to visit Melchior, near Medina.
The old guy at the End of Time will often give you a useful hint if you’re lost.

Nothing else reaches the same quality as Chrono Trigger in the same way. You have to settle for lower quality with similar pacing, or try to reach the same level of quality in a different way.
Similar pacing, lower quality: Phantasy Star IV, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy IV
Comparable quality, different style: Earthbound, Final Fantasy VII (FF6 is the real answer, but FF7 is the most similar game to FF6)
Similar aspects, lower quality: Dragon Quest IV, Radical Dreamers & Chrono Cross, possibly Radiant Historia - Comment on Suddenly seeing more hexbear posts. Did we re-federate with them? 9 months ago:
we’re centrists. we hold the political center between anarchism and Marxism-Leninism.
Is that an inside joke? Because outside of Hexbear and maybe 1930s Catalonia, “between anarchism and Leninism” is extreme left.
- Comment on YouTube and Reddit are sued for allegedly enabling the racist mass shooting in Buffalo that left 10 dead 10 months ago:
In the USA it’s not a crime to be racist, promote a religion teaching that God wants you to be racist, say most racist things in public, or even join the American Nazi Party. The line is set at threatening, inciting, or provoking violence, and judges don’t accept online arguments that saying racist garbage is inherently threatening.

As a technological problem it could have a technological partial solution: the darker the skin, the higher the threshold to declare a match. This would also mean more false negatives (real matches not caught by the software) but not much to do about that.

- Comment on Recently picked up Chrono Trigger - Amazing Game! 11 months ago:
There’s nothing quite like Chrono Trigger.
Dragon Quest IV/Dragon Warrior IV was a strong influence on Chrono Trigger’s medieval era. If you wanted an entire game about the Hero, DQ4 is the closest you’re ever likely to get. (Does that make Recettear a sister game to Chrono Trigger?)
Phantasy Star IV has a similarly fast-moving and cinematic plot, but the graphics and gameplay are more archaic as befits a 1993 game. Strongly recommended if you want to play older JRPGs like DQ4.
Final Fantasy VI (released as “Final Fantasy III”) is similar in quality and difficulty, but much longer and more complex.
Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross continue the story, but they have a much darker tone.
Earthbound/Mother 2 came out the same year and is another of the greats, but that’s where most of the similarities end. Earthbound might be the only 16-bit classic whose tone is “all of them”. Earthbound can be quite hard early on, so don’t get discouraged.
