- Comment on Has Fast Food Gotten Worse, or Am I Just Getting Old? 1 week ago:
The answer is probably "yes"
- Food is probably worse.
- Your taste buds might have changed.
- Your gut bacteria might be different.
I have a couple reasons for believing each.
- Nutrient concentration in food has decreased over time (Veritasium talked about a fascinating explanation for this.) and the desire to find low cost alternatives like HFCS over cane sugar changes the taste of food.
- "Children prefer higher levels of sweet and are more sensitive to bitter tastes until adolescence."
- Your gut microbiome literally changes over time.changing/)

Harris is a common name for Americans. Sarah is too. Her name isn’t Kalama. The error shows how exciting it is to you and your autocorrect.
- Comment on Anyone else feel like Trump has a much higher chance to win then Presidency than Kamala? 3 months ago:
I hear female supporters refer to her as Kamala. I think it might have more to do with the uniqueness of the name. I don’t know of anyone who referred to Sarah Palin as Sarah.
- Comment on Traveling this summer? Maybe don’t let the airport scan your face. 3 months ago:
Hour vs. hour it’s the best form of transportation
You get more space, there’s no TSA, you don’t get charged for bringing luggage, you can carry on liquids, you get leg room, the wifi is decent.
But if I’m traveling a really far distance… For example, if I’m going from California to New York I’d rather go by plane. Going by train for that seems to be pretty horrible. America is in desperate need of a ground transportation that can get from California to New York quickly.

I should’ve specified I was citing Netflix’s current US pricing help.netflix.com/en/node/24926 and YouTube’s current US pricing www.youtube.com/premium.

YouTube ad tier: $0 Netflix ad tier: $6.99 YouTube premium: $13.99 Netflix standard: $15.49
They don’t charge more than Netflix, but most of their content is definitely provided to them for free. On top of that, most of YouTube’s original content is behind their premium subscription paywall. I tried to see how many of their originals shows are actually viewable with their ad tier and it’s hard to pin down a number. My speculation is it doesn’t matter because either so few people are willing to pay for premium or their originals aren’t very marketable. Off the top of my head I’d heard of exactly one YouTube original.

Doesn’t seem staged. The demo was imperfect in very normal ways. One imperfection was when it was referencing an old picture that he had earlier sent to the program.
I’d be more convinced it was staged if everything were perfect.

The only time I enjoyed a toxic fan base was for the show Under the Dome. Everyone seemed to hate watch the show and it made the whole thing more fun. The toxicity had the benefit of not being about social issues and just about how the show wasn’t high quality writing.
Off the top of my head, one thing people hated is that the main character hurt her leg and wore the bandage over her jeans.
Man, I should rewatch that show.

At the very least, it might be nice if they ask you if you want to go there instead.
On the other hand, I’m just happy that Google Scholar hasn’t gotten completely destroyed by SEO yet.

In fairness, I was thinking specifically of plants. I expect better results when looking up “S. lycopersicum” than “tomato”.
An example off the top of my head is saying pyrite instead of fool’s gold.

scholar.google.com is where you want to go.
Also, in my Google-fu experience technical terms work well for finding better scholarly results.

In a non-Euclidean space you can have values of pi that aren’t even constant. The first that came to mind was the surface of a sphere. This is actually an interesting problem.

Any good captain knows that’s a rule worth breaking. If your options are: a) save a whole planet of people or b) keep your fancy status job in a post-scarcity economy, then you know it’s morally worth it to get court marshalled.

I’m not sure about the top one. He could be saying everyone is living a life of sin.
The bottom one is definitely saying he lives an odd life because that’s literally an odd function. i.e.
f(-x) = -f(x) for all x

Forrest Gump is one of the many stories that could use a two viewpoints from both the guy and the girl like they did in 500 Days of Summer or The Affair. It’s much easier to sympathize with someone when you get to see the story the way they experience it.

People in the USA would probably reword that sentence as “And North America is in the Americas.”
It’s similar to how North and South Dakota are called “The Dakotas,” not “Dakota.”

I think you’re right about the glasses. At the very least they’re probably better than that frying pan. The more I think about it they might be right under that penny.
- Comment on It's dangerous to go alone. Take this. 11 months ago:
I’ll do you one better and rank these instead.
- Lucky Penny
- Caffeinated shoes
- Fatigue masking mask
- Frying pan of flavor
- The cool glasses
- Underwear of febreze
I really wanted to put the caffeinated shoes at number 1, but the lucky Penny sounds OP.
Also, the underwear is an unfortunate item because most people who need it wouldn’t choose it. It’s also the only item that could be simulated with one hour of effort a day (at most) for most people.
