- Comment on CrowdStrike downtime apparently caused by update that replaced a file with 42kb of zeroes 3 months ago:
crowdstrike has caused issues like this with linux systems in the past, but sounds like they have now moved to eBPF user mode by default (I don’t know enough about low level linux to understand that though haha), and it now can’t crash the whole computer. source
- Comment on Qualcomm spends millions on marketing as it is found better battery life, not AI features, is driving Copilot+ PC sales 4 months ago:
open source drivers were developed for apple’s gpus, so if there is demand seems like someone would do it for qualcomm

hermione was criticized a lot by pretty much everyone when she tried to free the house elves and made badges etc.
- Comment on Why are quantum computers these gorgeous golden chandelier 4 months ago:
lots of fun techniques, a common one for getting down low enough where other methods become practical is stirling cryocoolers, and those are even on ebay for a few thousand (cascade refrigeration systems, and joule thompson coolers are also used), way down past that theres stuff like weird magnetic coolers, and dilution coolers All very interesting, reading about exotic cooling methods is fun.
- Comment on First human brain implant malfunctioned, Neuralink says 6 months ago:
ok but the real interesting stuff like reading hand writing from a paralyzed person imagining writing it and etc are all only for actual electrodes in brains.
- Comment on Innovation or Overreach? UH Research Casts blame on OceanGate's Submersible Design says: Low quality carbon fibre lead to the accident 6 months ago:
Your point makes sense, but an epoxy submersible definitely wouldn’t make it down to the titanic intact even once, and there are some ways fibers could be put in tension by compressing the cylinder, so its just complicated. They shouldve just build a normal submersible though.
- Comment on The teens making friends with AI chatbots 6 months ago:
i dunno, too many teenagers have pretty much no concerns about (online) privacy at all
- Comment on Vanguard takes screenshots of your PC every time you play a game 6 months ago:
it simply wouldn’t trust the client with anything the player shouldn’t know, to minimize cheating potential. valorant does this, and made a blog post about it. also, player movement could be analyzed server side to attempt to distiguish between cheating and legit.
I think client side invasive anti cheat is likely more effective than this, but its a cat and mouse game. if the anticheat was server side and good, there isn’t anything to attack
- Comment on Vanguard takes screenshots of your PC every time you play a game 6 months ago:
server side anticheat is the only ultimate solution.
all client side anticheat measures will have vulnerabilities that will be found and people will cheat. (look at DMA pci cards, for instance)
- Comment on NHS charter to stress biological sex when placing patients in wards 6 months ago:
such a stupid thing to whine about. what if they got surgery and they are externally identical to a cis woman, do they still need to go in the ward for men? just let people be.
- Comment on To buy no longer means anything :( 8 months ago:
cracked servers (that dont need a microsoft account and dont use their authentication) are quite common, in fact you dont need “patched” server software to make one, it is literally a setting in the default microsoft provided server!
you would want some sort of in game authentication through a plugin (spigot, bukkit, etc) to prevent people from claiming to be your username and the server blindly trusting them and getting your stuff stolen though.

- Comment on NASA, Lockheed Martin Reveal X-59 Quiet Supersonic Aircraft 9 months ago:
lack of redundancy is a concern, but the same was said for fly by wire cutting the physical link between stick and controls. fly by wire is ubiquitous now, can be made very very safe, and is a net gain for aviation in general.
not having a window is obviously a bigger challenge, but its still a solvable problem.

newpipe is just a client for accessing youtubes servers, yes, so if youtube went away we would need to use vimeo or something else (maybe peertube, open source yt alternative?)

- Comment on Mullvad and Tailscale Announce Partnership 1 year ago:
sure illegal content can be accessed over a vpn without port forwarding, but when someone hosting a child porn site over a mullvad ip, that is clearly a larger problem
- Comment on Mullvad and Tailscale Announce Partnership 1 year ago:
although people hosting illegal content using port forwarding is likely one of the reasons they removed it, so its a tricky problem

no, cars repaired by people other than the manufacturer wont kill you

yeah, for nuclear explosions I don’t think practical effects will ever look right. CGI can look incredibly realistic if they have the money for it.

I gave up on it relatively quick, and only recently finished it after 1500 deaths lol

very very good game, it does get pretty challenging at some points though, idk if a 5 yr old would like it

- Comment on Google's trying to DRM the internet, and we have to make sure they fail 1 year ago:
I’m sure there’s a few sites that don’t work on Firefox, but I’ve definitely never ran into one, so its gotta be a very very small issue.
Regarding extensions, that is an issue I’ve had, but it turns out that some extensions can be ported to Firefox relatively easily. I don’t have a clue how to write browser extension’s, but all I had to do was make a mozilla developer account and you can convert automatically them there. There are certainly some (or most, not sure) that would require someone to manually port to Firefox though.
All in all, its almost a perfect drop in replacement.
- Comment on Google's trying to DRM the internet, and we have to make sure they fail 1 year ago:
I don’t know anything else, but I have been using firefox for a while, and I can’t think of any times where a website didn’t work. Seems like a almost perfect drop in replacement for chromium currently, just needs people to do it.
