- Comment on Has google stopped working for finding anything? 10 months ago:
While i do think people are exagerating that google is useless, and the kagi push on lemmy is suspiciously strong, I do still hate what google has become. It lies to me, almost every time I ask it what movie an actor has been in.
google claims Alan Tudyk is in Andor, when he isn’t. There are one or two articles of people suggesting that he might end up in Andor, but nothing official. Google pulls from the rumors and says “yep, he’s clearly in Andor”. The way i search this is by typing just an actors name then clicking the “movies and tv” option.

It’s possible for two things to be true. Sometimes the police need to use deadly force. They also very frequently use excessive deadly force.

- Comment on Sweet Baby Inc: Why Modern Gaming has Become Woke Political Garbage 11 months ago:
I’m glad for the ability to change pronouns, I know a lot of trans and non-binary people who really appreciate the inclusion, and it doesn’t impact the game in any negative ways. I think people can outgrow ignorance and bias, but it takes a significant amount of work and a willingness to change. Unfortunately, not many people see any reason to challenge their bias and bigotry so it rarely happens.

- Comment on Is there a timeline/plan for lemm.ee to upgrade to 0.19? 1 year ago:
Huh, I thought I’d seen at least one other instance on it so I thought so, but now I’m not sure. I may have misinterpreted their attempts at getting 0.19 to work as it actually being released. My app is ready for 0.19, so I assumed I was just waiting for lemm.ee to catch up (and we all know what they say about assuming…)

When I really needed extra money I donated plasma. It’s one of those things that pays you more the more you do it, still not a lot but everything helps. Also seconding dental schools, it won’t be free but can save you thousands

- Comment on The association between screen time and genetic risks for neurodevelopmental disorders in children 1 year ago:
The study concludes that the evidence suggests that genetic factors influence a child’s screen time, not the other way around :)
This raises the possibility that long screen time is not a cause of ASD, but rather an early symptom that ASD individuals are more attracted to objects than to people. Conversely, the ADHD-PRS was found to be associated with changes in screen time during the observation period. ADHD-PRS was associated with increase in screen time, which was potentially thought to be associated with ADHD subjects’ susceptibility to gaming addiction.
Parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders are often criticized for allowing their children too much screen time in order to reduce parenting difficulties, which may deprive the children of opportunities to acquire language and social skills (Lissak, 2018; Trinh et al., 2020). To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that genetic risks for neurodevelopmental disorders may affect the length of screen time in children. Thus, caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders should be helped and offered alternative behavioural management strategies.

Except there is math in nature, such as fractals and the Fibonacci sequence. Sure nature doesn’t have any awareness of doing math, but it is there. Not all math is made up just for our understanding.
- Comment on What were some movies you had to look up explanations of after watching? 1 year ago:
I didn’t exactly need the ending explained, but Everything Everywhere All At Once has so much going on that I got really hyper focused on looking up commentary for everything in the movie. There were a lot of things I missed so I found it really valuable beyond just wanting to deep dive every little detail haha.
Surprisingly, after all the hype of Interstellar being incredibly confusing, I felt like I missed something because it seemed fairly straightforward (not the plot, which was obviously convoluted, just that I understood the ending). Then I looked up explanations of the ending and they fit my interpretation so that was a bit anticlimactic lol

I do think apps are useful for maintaining some level of reading fluency after establishing a baseline competency. I took 4 years of French through high school and college, but that was years ago. I stopped working on it for a long time and lost like 90% of my vocab and conjugations, but apps are bringing most of it back. They haven’t helped at all for listening though, I’ve been relying on listening to TV/movies/podcasts in French to improve as I can’t afford tutoring with any native speakers.
