- Comment on Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising 2 days ago:
Especially in a paid service, like why do I pay for these services if you’re still going to advertise, track, or datamine? I know the answer is greed, why profit off of one option when you can profit off of all of them, but I, the consumer, am fed up with the customer abuse.

Eternity, loved it on Reddit, love it on Lemmy, bless the Open Source community for keeping it alive

This has me curious, not to derail the topic, but I always hear that ClamAV is the best way to go for Linux. Is there a free solution that you would recommend in place of it?

- Comment on How many of you actually use the headphone jack on your phone? 6 months ago:
I used to every day when I worked at a music shop and would play audio demos from it. The loss of the port made my job VERY difficult to do. Now that I work in a new field and have had to invest in some bluetooth earbuds, I don’t find that I’d need the port very often, though the audiophile in me misses it sometimes, especially since bluetooth can be so unreliable sometimes. Don’t miss the dangling cable, but the thing is, I can bluetooth earbud on a phone that has a 3.5mm jack too, the fact that they removed it from phones as a standard when it’s such a cheap part to implement is baffling, especially when we’re paying tons for phones. I can have 16gb RAM, and 8-cores, bud God forbid I want to be able to plug in a speaker and have my phone plugged into the charger at the same time, like a repurposed old phone for a home audio system or something.

I like the way a coworker put it to me, it’s the same reason we have locks on our doors and curtains on our windows, it’s not because we have something to hide, but a right to privacy that tech giants have widely ignored.

Now I’m wishing I’d gotten the chance to play Gigantic! If you discover a playable client and server, lemme know, because I’m loving how that looks

Good timing, too, Talos Principle 2 was just announced
- Comment on What do you think of framework and their methods? 9 months ago:
I say we celebrate their successes! Don’t let perfection be the enemy of progress; the fact that they’re trying to do something about sustainability is far more than can be said for most laptop manufacturers, and the more the industry sees them succeed, the more it will follow suite.

Ah, excellent, thank you so much for answering that!

I also feel like that’s to be expected, I bet big companies see graphs just like this too. There was anger and hype for a lot of people to move to a new platform. Many did, but it didn’t become the new habit for everyone. That’s not a failure of Lemmy. In fact, I’d say this is an impressive metric, especially considering we do not know what defines “active”. Is logging in what mark someone as active? Upvoting? Commenting? We should see this graph as a big win, especially during Lemmy’s infancy.

God, I was starting to think it was a fever dream, that was my first instance, then suddenly it was gone. I still check every now and then if it’s back up. After a while, I assumed it wasn’t coming back and made my new home, but it still holds a special place for me.

I’ve got 32gb, it’s not an active issue, just feels wasteful, especially when EVERYTHING is RAM-heavy anymore, with the rise of electron apps. I personally haven’t really needed any more though, this isn’t to bash those who decide that they want more extensions for one reason or another

Extensions nom nom memory, so I use as few as possible and just use uBlock, Dark Reader, and Bitwarden
