US Border Patrol agents raided the border wall protest camp near Lochiel, Arizona early Monday morning, arresting at least 10 land defenders and felling the “Grandmother Tree,” a centuries-old cottonwood protesters had protected for more than 70 days. Since late July, community members from both sides of the border have rotated through a “tree-sit” protest in the San Rafael Valley, to halt construction of a 27-mile double steel border wall on a $334 million CBP contract with the Trump administration. Border Patrol has refused to answer questions about the arrests, and protesters returned Tuesday, occupying another tree and calling on the community to come out en masse to reinforce the camp and stop construction. BT Disrupter Ellen Caminiti reports from Lochiel, where she spent five days with in the camp.
