This was intentionally implemented a while ago. It's called "lazy loading". The idea behind is to reduce the server load when loading bigger conversations.

Let's suppose someone boosts a post from a very famous Mastodon user to you. Then this post receives, like, 180 comments. And then you come back to your channel to see the post and the 180 comments.

Previously, Hubzilla would load all 180 comments at once even though it'd only display the last three of them. Also, it'd only display them on one level in chronological order as if they're all direct replies to the start post.

Now, Hubzilla only loads the comments that you want to see, by and by. This strains the server much less than loading all 180 comments at once. Also, Hubzilla displays the comments in a tree-like fashion so you can see immediately who has replied to whom.

You can go back to the old mode by going to the display settings and turning off "Threaded conversation view". However, this comes with a number of disadvantages:
  • You also get the old "flat" view back in which all comments are displayed on one level, chronologically, regardless of who has replied to whom. It gets very tedious to follow a branch in the conversation.
  • You can no longer reply to comments yourself either, only to the start post. Your channel loses any and all support for the tree style.
  • You might lose the buttons for embedding images and other media in comments because you also get the old comment editor below the conversation back (instead of the one that pops up when you click the Reply button).
  • Hubzilla still won't show you all comments right away, like, the start post and all 180 comments right below immediately. It has never done that. What it'll do instead is show you the last 3 comments. You have to click to see the other comments.
