COMPUTER SAYS NO... 💎

I’ve been trying ChatGPT Work. That is, ChatGPT for working, building, coding, etc., as different from chatting.

The intelligence usually understands exactly what I want. Then the computer gets in the way.

A button moves. A permission appears. A website behaves differently. A menu changes.

A HUMAN ADJUSTS AND KEEPS ON GOING.

Work sometimes reacts as if it has encountered a tiger in a strange forest.

To be fair, I am 70 and only have one working hand. I’m hardly the world’s most elegant computer operator, so between the two of us it can occasionally look like a very slow hostage negotiation.

THAT’S THE REAL GAP NOW.

ChatGPT needs to be able to log in to my computer as my AI Aid, with the permissions I choose for it, and have the same practical controls I have: mouse, keyboard, etc.

Not, tell me what to click.

DO IT ALL ITSELF.

GPT, please sort my YouTube subscriptions.
Post our recent creation on Mastodon.
Find that email from Bill.
Change a setting.
Edit an image file.
Move between banking and email services.
Finish every job.

I shouldn’t need to carry information between apps like a courier while the AI stands in a daze beside me holding the clipboard.

Most of the pieces already exist: browser control, connected accounts, plugins, persistent sign-ins, computer use.

WHAT’S MISSING IS THE INTEGRATION.

The Star Trek Computer arrives when I can identify myself to the AI once, grant it the permissions I choose, and speak naturally while it moves through my digital life until the objective is completed.

WE’RE NOT WAITING FOR THE INVENTION ANYMORE.

We’re waiting for all the pieces to become one computer.

Between this 70-year-old bloke with one working hand and an AI that panics when a button moves, I’m not always sure who’s helping whom.
