Former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, one of former president Jair Bolsonaro’s sons, who moved to the United States last year claiming to suffer political and judicial persecution in Brazil, was sentenced to one year in prison by the Supreme Court in a defamation trial against a parliamentarian.

In a virtual trial whose final votes were known on Friday night, the Supreme Federal Court (STF), by seven votes to three, found the former legislator guilty of defaming congresswoman Tabata Amaral, the court reported this Saturday.

This is the second conviction suffered by Eduardo Bolsonaro since he left Brazil, as last June the same Supreme Court imposed a sentence of four years and two months in prison after finding him responsible for the crime of coercion against justice.

In addition to one year in prison, the Court imposed a fine of about 80,000 reais (about 15,420 dollars) on the politician from the far-right Liberal Party (PL) for his defamatory statements against the congresswoman from the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSL).

The offended legislator filed a criminal complaint in 2021 after Eduardo Bolsonaro made a false accusation when referring to a bill that Amaral presented for consideration to Congress to force the Government to distribute sanitary pads.

Bolsonaro’s son then assured that the congresswoman was serving the interests of a hygiene products company whose owner would have sponsored her political campaigns.Judge Alexandre de Moraes, the instructor of the process in Congress, concluded that the statements did not correspond to the facts and that they affected Tabata Amaral’s honor.

“The conviction represents a new setback for Eduardo Bolsonaro, who last Monday was dismissed from his position as a clerk of the Federal Police for abandonment of office.
