@fediversereport The option of having a shared institution take care of watermarking verification makes me think that it could be handled like HTTPS (partially), where there are a handful of providers taking care of most of the certificates (Let's Encrypt and GlobalSign together handle around 90% of the SSL certificate authority market share), so they could provide inference providers with the private keys and keep a register, and become a verification authority too. We could have a few trusted authorities that can be their own entities or can be created as the result of a coordination effort from different companies. We could then have a signature similar to what we get with HTTPS, along the lines of "Generated by Anthropic (validated by SynthAuthority)".
