What struck me is not so much the specific failure cases or problems, but that the tech leaders all seem to expect a huge society failure ... like they are on a runaway train with no way to stop it (if we slow down and do this properly the Chinese won't ... so we have to keep going as fast as we can).
Its not "Joe Public" opinions in the program, its the current leaders who know this stuff and are working as hard as possible on it.
The optimists in the program say it might be possible to turn the current "race to the bottom" (fastest company to deliver the best AI wins everywhere, regardless of quality/safeguards etc) into a "race to the top" (great tools to benefit everyone). I just don't see this happening in the current political climate.
My research over the last few years on generative AI has led me to a personal option that its interesting technology with some specific great uses, but I don't really want to use it ... too many downsides for me such as climate impact, AI slop, reducing your own thinking, dependencies, costs, ads, theft of training data etc etc.
But I'm wondering now if I'm not pessimistic enough (or, I suppose, being concerned about the wrong things).
