The series was produced by the short lived ZIV TV network using the holdings of the General Newsreel Company. Episodes ran for 12 minutes covering a variety of topics including news, fashion, sports and politics providing modern viewers with a glimpse into global history. The compilation is broken into segments beginning with the final emperor of Germany; Wilhelm II’s exile into the Netherlands at the close of WWI. Other portions feature the 1933 Chesapeake-Potomac hurricane’s devastation along the east coast and the demobilization of WWI troops as patriotic celebrations erupt in New York for the return of the ‘Fighting 69th.” Footage captures WWI soldiers, artillery, Woodrow Wilson, gyroplanes and the historic steamship; the “Grand Republic.” 0:00 Title screen (:23) and the ZIV TV logo. “Emperor into Exile” (:40) opens with Wilhelm II and his wife, Hermine Reuss of Griez (:49). Wilhelm reigned as Kaiser from 1888 until his abdication on November 9th 1918 following a series of military defeats. His reign fell with the collapse of the German war effort leading to the end of the German monarchy. Wilhelm was exiled to the Netherlands. The Dutch government granted him asylum and refused to submit to Allied demands to extradite him as a war criminal. He and Hermine greet military officials (1:05). German soldiers march down a lightly wooded trail (1:22) for group photographs (1:34). Soldiers move down city streets (1:54). The German Calvary follows (2:01). Drivers run through rural portions of an unidentified town (6:00). The trophy winner celebrates (6:22). Personalities of 1928 (6:25) highlights Arne Borg (6:45); the Swedish swimmer. Arne broke 32 world records and won 5 Olympic medals. In 1933 (8:10), the Chesapeake-Potomac Hurricane struck the north eastern US coast most notably Maryland’s Ocean City, Ocean View, Virginia and fishing piers of New Jersey. Footage opens with rescue efforts (8:16) and houses in flood waters (8:25). A man swims for a window in a drowning house (8:28). A Ford Model T drives past a tipped over bus (8:44). Rough sea waters blow up a passenger liner’s hull (8:56). Erosion along the beaches sunk beachfront properties in sand (9:05). Porches appear slumped (9:10). A local shovels out a Model T from sand (9:12). Footage highlights damaged boardwalks (9:16) piers (9:27). A pair stand atop a ruined train (9:36). April of 1919 saw the return of the famed “Fighting 69th” regiment to New York City following active duty tours in Germany during WWI (10:01). The troops were a part of the 42nd (Rainbow) Division. US flags wave frantically as troop bearing ships make way for New York harbors (10:10-10:52). The “Grand Republic;” the largest steamboat ever constructed for excursion purposes exclusively in the port of New York, appears (11:18). Ferries cart troops inland (11:24). Crowds fill the grounds below Madison Square Park’s Victory Arch (11:38). The Keystone B-3 (12:17) loaded with bombs (12:26). Pilots (12:40) release the payload (12:42). Curtiss Model D in flight (13:07). 1920’s fashion featuring female hat makers (13:25) modeling work hats (13:41) and fashionable varieties (13:45). It concludes with the 1939 Master’s Tournament (14:24) in Augusta, Georgia won by Ralph Guldahl (16:10). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
