For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Death Note (2006), the anime adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba’s manga of the same name. It follows the misadventures of Light Yagami, a young man who obtains an evil notebook into which he can write the name of any person and thereby kill them. He vows to use his powers to rid the world of evil, but what happens when he becomes the bad guy himself? Cue suspense. The crew for this show overlaps with that tof Samurai Champloo (2004) and Attack on Titan (2014), among others. This is often considered one of the best anime of all time, so let’s give it a whirl. Episodes 25 through 30 tonight.

After that is The Death of Superman (2018), the straight-to-video animated adaptation of the highly-acclaimed 1993 storyline of the same name, which centers on a meteroite that strikes Earth, only to mutate into a superpowered abomination named Doomsday that is determined to destroy Earth. Superman swoops in to save the day, but uh-oh, this is one opponent that he can’t just punch into submission. Has the Man of Steel met his match? Judging from the title, I am guessing yes, at least temporarily. Director Sam Liu has made a career out of adaptations of famous DC stories, such as Superman: Red Son (2020), which we watched last week.
