Japan's classrooms are becoming the latest front in a country actively reinventing both its history and its role in the world. Newly approved high school textbooks, entering classrooms in 2027, contain omissions that are anything but accidental. Only one of the nine high school history textbooks in use covers the Nanjing Massacre in its core text. This is happening as Japan expands its military role and steps back from the pacifist identity it built after World War II. A nation shedding its pacifism needs a generation that never fully understood why it was adopted.
