In this animation, we visualize the geoid, a scientific model that reveals tiny variations in Earth’s gravitational field. The strange distorted shape is not the physical surface of Earth, but a highly exaggerated representation of how gravity changes across the planet due to differences in mass distribution, ocean trenches, mountains, crust thickness, and deep structures inside the mantle. We created this animation to show how scientists can map invisible forces using data from missions like ESA’s GOCE (Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer), a satellite that measured Earth’s gravity with extraordinary precision from a very low orbit.
