Ants (particularly, Argentine ants) are the mortal enemies of bees. There is, however, a very large native red ant (SoCal) which does not raid the beehives, and actually keeps Argentine and other ants from bothering beehives. My son jokes about raising those red ants to help guard beehives, and set up beehives on top of red ant piles. I don't know the species or have a photo, but always pleased when a ranch or farm has many of those and no Argentine ants.
