The castle was built by the influential family of the Piccolomini which were considered to be one of the most powerful feudal families in medieval and Renaissance Italy. Its foundation was laid in the late 14th century and it was finished by 1463. Its original appearance remains largely intact. Since it got renovated in the 1950s, it serves as a museum.
