When I started this series, I thought: 'Hey, I'm constantly singing while working in the garden or house; I should just turn on a camera. It'll be easy!' Never say that!!! It turns out most of the time I'm singing I'm either making a lot of noise (watering, weeding, cleaning the chickens, etc.) or I'm moving around too much to film (harvesting, weeding, etc.) But anyway, I've managed to find a couple of instances where I had both the appropriate activity and the presence of mind to turn on the camera, and I still feel it's nice to share these slightly uncommon songs in the way I learned to use them: as company and expression during a typical day! I learned a lot of the songs I know from my mother, and she learned many of those from her sister, my Aunt Mimi, and also from various members of the Vancouver Folksong Society, and traditional singers and songwriters she either knew as friends or as recording artists. We don't have many people in our lives who know these songs, and it does get lonely, so in keeping my Mum's memory alive, I want to record some of them. My mother taught me that music is for everyone; that music is the story of life, and is with us from the moment we're born until we die. We sang her out of this world, and I mean to keep on singing.
