Looked up today and the sky was doing the most. Heavy grey clouds stacked on top of each other like they couldnât decide what to do, but then youâd get these random patches of blue breaking through and the sun trying to force its way out from the middle. The air felt damp and cool on my skin so I knew it either rained earlier or it was gearing up to pour again any minute. Down below it was all normal town stuff, power lines cutting across the frame, those big black water tanks sitting on rooftops, and the edge of some zinc roofs. That mix of everyday ground stuff with that messy, moody sky made the whole thing feel like one of those in-between afternoons where youâre not sure if you should grab an umbrella or just wait it out.
Then out of nowhere this plane showed up, just a tiny black speck at first moving slow across all that grey. I had to squint and then zoom in to actually see it properly. Once I did you could make out the full shape, the wings stretched out, the tail, everything. It wasnât super high, it was right up in the cloud layer so it kept disappearing and reappearing. Some clouds were thick and dark, others were soft and white, all layered like cotton. Every time the plane dipped behind one it would vanish for a few seconds and then pop out the other side like it was playing hide and seek. From down here it looked peaceful, but I kept thinking about how bumpy it probably was inside with all that cloud cover.
The weather honestly made the whole thing hit different. Because the clouds were so heavy the light kept shifting every few seconds. One moment a gap would open and sunlight would slice through and light up part of the sky, next moment it would go dull and grey again. The plane just kept cruising through it like it owned the place. I kept wondering what it looked like from inside, probably passengers looking out at endless white and grey, while maybe just above them it was clear blue. That contrast got me, down here we had rooftops, wires, and that damp town air, up there it was just sky and that one aircraft cutting through it all alone. It made the clouds feel massive, like walls the plane had to push through.
Itâs funny how a simple thing like that stays with you. Just standing outside, cloudy, a little bit of rain in the air, watching a plane move through the clouds in silence. No engine sound from this far, just quiet and the slow drag of the plane across the sky. It made me think about how many flights are up there every single day, rain or shine, and how we barely notice them. After a while the plane got smaller and smaller until it was just another dot and then it was gone completely. The clouds didnât go anywhere though. They just kept rolling, shifting, and blocking the sun like they had all the time in the world.
