On one hand, the optimist inside me thinks this might be a bulwark against imperialism, colour revolutions, and possibly an attempt at creating a dictatorship of the proletariat.
On the other, the pessimist in me thinks this is a very old man and his wife who should have chosen (or held elections for) a successor many years ago and are clinging to power all the while making a mockery of a socialist movement.
Maybe it’s a bit of column A, bit of column B. I don’t know enough about Nicaragua to pass judgment.
