Ever since I heard the song, I was confused. The gist of these lyrics is that “you” are in a negative, confused mood. “Piqued as any alp,” but mountains don’t have feelings. So I figured there must be some meaning of “alp” that was about a living creature? After all, an “alpaca” is a living thing… so I took my guess and just lived with the uncertainty every time I heard the song.
Song got stuck in my head again. Finally looked up the definition of “alp” and only found mountains. Only then did I realize it’s meant to be wordplay on “piqued” (the feeling) sounding just like “peaked” (the thing mountains can be).
