The whole train thing is staple of watching NASCAR, which also features regular passenger car-shaped racing cars.
The in-line drafting thing to gain speed definitely works, and it’s a wonder we haven’t seen more of it before.
As is the trading paint between cars.
Watching NASCAR drivers organize themselves into trains is fun, and watching some car that falls out of the train is painful.
Teams talk with each other in the pits, arranging to swap the lead so they each get points for leading a couple of laps, before peeling off and dropping to the back of the train to save their tires.
This is unlike Formula 1 where dirty air aerodynamics behind their super-optimized winged cars ruins the thrill of drafting close behind. Although I hear things have gotten slightly better, but the things that the rules committee introduced like temporary overtaking boosts feel very contrived.
