imo they either talk to people they know or try to get public attention. social networking vs social media. these two goals usually take different tech and norms. both can and should be done without the abuse that arises out of a search for profit without the taming influences of competition (made possible by decentralization and interoperability) and proper regulation.
fedi is built to be big but dominated by people who want it to be small.
