    There have been cases of people dying doing this, but it is pretty well establsihed that people can do this… And so the most famous free solo climber in the world doing it did not strike me as a particularly high risk activity, right.

    There’s no way that Honnold would do this if he wasn’t sure.

    By the way - there is a controversy surrounding Honnold and his team…

    When he goes to certain places to do free solo climbs, he has to send a guy ahead of him the day before or morning before to clear out any potential hazards, which actually means that they basically rip out a significant amount of POTENTIAL holds on the cliff faces. Obviously, those are completely unsafe for Honnold if they do not fully support his weight, and so they must be removed so he cn climb up without confusion…

    But the problem is that other climbers who take normal safety precautions and use ropes actually routinely use these holds, and they find them quite convenient.

    It ends up altering the cliff faces for people who go after him permanently.
