I have only listened to the first episode. So now I am required to finish the series.
I remember hearing that they had a rule regarding on-screen being the only thing truly “canon”, with the first exception being Picard. Does this mean that whole thing is just out the window now?
Strictly speaking, there’s no formal rule - you won’t find a CBS/Paramount definition of “canon” anywhere that I’m aware of.
In practice, they stick with the tv shows and films.
But they’ve also worked very hard over the last few years to keep the tie-in novels and things like that “canon-ish,” in that they flesh out backstories from the shows, and the shows mostly don’t step on their efforts.
It sounds like the podcast is getting Thad treatment - as far as they’re concerned, this is what happened, and they have no plans to contradict it (and, considering the nature of the story, it’s not likely to come up one way or another).

Heard episode 1 and I am officially hooked, so yeah, time to binge the rest. Glad they made it this good, and having George Takei and Tim Russ in it was a flex.
Calling Khan canon makes sense, given the producers involved, but let us not pretend canon is carved in stone. Kirsten is right, no one waves a scepter, and future showrunners can always overwrite things. Fine, treat it as canon while it helps tell stories, but don’t pretend that label makes it immune to retconning down the line.
Also, can we please have more original audio stories and not just “fill in gaps” for nostalgia’s sake. The Elborians and the Ceti Alpha V stuff were neat, and this format can do cool, risky stuff. Just keep the quality up, and stop canonizing stuff for marketing reasons.
