Hello selfhosters,

I’m not sure if this is the right community, but it could be.

I want to self-host my own router and discard the ISP router. This is not a simple “plug in your own router to the ISP modem” and be done. Consider my scenario.

I am using something called Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) which provides 5G via Wifi. The h/w provided by my ISP are

  • A Wifi 6 router (OEM: Nokia)
  • An outdoor unit (ODU) (OEM: Nokia) (You can see all the h/w over here)

The connection between the router and the ODU is all ethernet; no fiber connection. But the ODU is PoE enabled via the router. The provided router is extremely limited in terms of capability (Cannot change DNS settings, fixed DHCP, no IP reservation etc). I want my own router.

I can spot 2 issues

  • Need a router with PoE support
  • Unsure if the ODU logic is independent of the ISP’s router. If yes, how will it authenticate with my own router.

Point 1 should be solved with a PoE adapter (TP-Link provides one). I’m unsure about Point 2. How should I go about it?

PS: My area does not have fiber access so far, otherwise I would have shifted long ago.
