    British agents would encourage secession talk with Southerners. They hoped that a split would make the US less powerful. Kind of backfired, because the war left the Union much stronger.

      Actually, I’m surprised that isn’t a bigger talking point in how the war went.

      I’m suddenly curious what the ramifications of a much lower supply of nicotine was on the Union army. Reading Tobacco by Iain Gately, it seems like tobacco was a near necessity (esp among the upper class -which would have been the officers of the armies), so I wonder how many bad decisions were made while one general or captain was going through some major withdrawals.
