Courtis / Moore – Brokebox Juke (2009, Argentina/UK)

Our next spotlight is on number 376 on The List, submitted by platenworm, chosen simply to keep the previously unintended trend of having a slash in the title going for one more spotlight.

This is the first of a handful of collaborations between multi-instrumentalists Alan (aka Anla) Courtis (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Aaron Moore (Leicestershire, UK). Created via email, the duo uses the space of 7 tracks to explore various corners of the nebulous thing that is experimental music, flirting with breezy soundscapes, abstract string explorations, drum-forward improv, moody if not slightly haunting piano, darkly droning meditations produced from instruments and other objects, incendiary psychedelic guitar, and a tinge of electronic processing. The variety keeps the listener intrigued, alert, inspired to make music with a beard trimmer. Beautiful.

The cover art is a black and grey photo of a sidewalk with a few people's legs in frame, taken while moving so they're blurred. The artists' names are in the upper left corner in white font, and the album name is in the same font in the upper right corner.
